Klein There was magic in the Capitol Campus auditorium April 10 when Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, learned that adventures can do more for you than "make you late for dinner." Bilbo Baggins is the main character in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" which was performed by the Hutsah Puppet Theatre under the direction of Mark Larson. Rusty Steiger, who built most of the nearly life-sized puppets, com posed the pre-recorded musical score. For the uninitiated, hobbits live in Middle-Earth and are "unbearded little people, about half our height. and smaller than the • bearded dwarves. There is little or no magic about them...." PENN STATE STUDENTS But there was magic in the audience as it responded with enthusiasm to the artistry of this Chicago troupe of puppeteers and to the good-guy-bad guy situations as the hobbit aided the dwarves in recovery of their stolen gold. Gandalf, the wizard, was a favorite. He might seem to abandon the adven turing dwarves and the hobbit, but we all knew, when the chips were down, he would be back to save the day with his wizardry. "Where have you been?" Bilbo asks the wizard. "Looking ahead." Gandalf answers. "What brought you back?" asks the hobbit. "Looking behind." says Gandalf. The hero of the play was the hobbit who, in his bumbling way, changed the course of events with his reluctant and unconscious heroic, as the audience cheered him on. We breathed a sigh of relief when Bilbo escaped the squabbling, hungry trolls. Skin crawled when the party was trapped by a hairy, venomous, villainous spider, but the hobbit extri cated himself and the dwarves. Gollum, the hissing, lisping goblin, was appropriately horrible, yet sym pathy-provoking, as he engaged Bilbo in a "sacred riddle-game of immense antiquity"--winner take all. (Bilbo if successful in stumping the goblin, would be led to freedom, but Gollum, if the winner, would have hobbit hors d'oeuvres. The audience's hair stood on end when Smaug appeared. Smaug, who guarded the stolen gold, was a HUGE, winged, fire-breathing dragon with penetrating, illumined eyes. Like all dragons, Smaug had a weak spot. Bilbo' found it and the dragon was overcome. Bilbo, at the end, was back in his hobbit hole where he gladly related his adventure. He no longer saw them as he once had--as "nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things." The audience agreed.
