Accounting Internship P by JOSEPH MINNICI This past summer Mr. Phil Buchanan of the business faculty contacted sixty-four public accounting firms, corporations and government agencies regarding par ticipation in the Capitol Campuses new accounting internship. Out of these con tacts, fifteen indicated interest in an accounting internship. "The primary objective of the internship is to afford students the opportunity to gain practical on-the-job ex perience in the field of ac counting, which is currently not possible in the classroom. The interns will have the chance to interact with ac counting practitioners which it is hoped, will assist students in developing career goals", states Mr. Buchanan. A secondary objective of the internship is to assist in the placement function. Prerequisites for this program depend upon the nature of the job as evaluated by the Accounting faculty. Mr. Buchanan hopes that all will receive internship offers. The internship will be of fered winter term and run for ten weeks. Each student successfully completing his assignment shall receive credit for one course. Grading will be on a pass-fail basis only and all interns will be well -compensated for their work. This year, all but two of the participating employers are C.P.A. firms. Mr. Buchanan says, "The majority of in ternships are located around the Capitol area. However, through contacts with the "Big 8" public accounting firms we could place students in various major metropolitan areas such as Baltimore, Pittsburgh, New COMMUNAL DINNER in - the STUDENT CENTER mem MONDAY, NOV. 25th TURKEY WILL BE PROVIDED BRING ALONG A DRESSING (vegetables, filling, dessert, salad, etc.) , Sign up in VENDORVILLE DONATION $1 PLEASE MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE! sponsered by HEAD . \ l / SHOP rte Phone 236-9588 Harrisburg, PAGE SIX Richard F. Lubomski York and Philadelphia". The, unique thing about the Capitol Campus program is that all firms employing recent accounting graduates are being encouraged to par ticipate, which includes both national and local public ac counting firms, corporations, private companies, and health care and governmental agencies. Most internships are designed exclusively for the "Big 8" firms. "We hope in the future to expand the program into the local, state and federal government", comments Mr. Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan believes the internship is of benefit to the entire Capitol Campus. Even if a firm doesn't employ an in tern they at least become aware that Capitol Campus exists and if at some point they need an intern or a full-time employee at Capitol is hope they will keep us in mind. This type of exposure is required if the Campus is to be recognized as the Pennsylvania State University in the Harrisburg area. THIS WEER'S JOKE STUDENT TO PROFESSOR: Do you always write your class lecture notes on yellow paper? PROFESSOR (GREATLY EMBARRASSED) No, they just get that way with age.
