MARCH 19 1987 Collegian PAGE 10 An inconsistent season hampers the Lady hoopsters by David Bruce Collegian Staff Writer "It was an inconsistent season," said Karin Sobotta, coach of the Behrend Women's Basketball team,"We began the season 1-8, but we went 8-8 in the second half of the season to finish 9-16." Much of the inconsistent play can be attributed to the youthfulness of the team. Six freshmen and two sophomores were on this season's roster. "We would play great during the first half, but lousy the second half,"said Coach Sobotta. Still, there was improvement over last season's 8-17 record. "We ended up 9-16, an improvement. We played a tough schedule, and I expected a lot from this team, maybe too much. But you have to expect a lot, otherwise you do not get enough accomplished," said the coach. 111111111 • MAZDA'S HIGH VELOCITY PHILOSOPHY THE NEW-GENERATION FUEL-INJECTED 1987 MAZDA RX-7. "Sonya came to the team in January (from West Virginia) and immediately became an impact player. She is strong and plays ex cellent defense. She knows how to play the game," said Coach Sobotta. "Michelle was the second leading rebounder on the team and made many clutch baskets, she is an excellent outside shooter." As for the team, the coach said that the best performances were against Frostburg, Geneva and Buffalo State. IM4 ftake, spettre's 161Kthislace, ..trEttforitt "The games against Frostburg and Geneva were our most consis tent games of the season, we played well and defeated good, stron teams." "The game against Buffalo State was the highlight of the season. We played them at Buffalo, and they were ranked fourth in the country. At halftime we were losing by fif teen points and I told my players to decide whether they wanted to play or not. In the second half, they scratched their way into the lead with 1:30 left in the game. After trading baskets, we finally won 70-69, definitely the highlight of the season," said Coach Sobotta. Coming off a 3-16-1 mark from a year ago, the Diamondettes hope to turn things around this year. Leading the girls' spring campaign is first year coach Anne Burbules. A Mercyhurst graduate, coach Burbules has the team conditioning 6-7 days a week. Their workouts concentrate on the basics: hitting in the cage, bunting, and infielding, with a half-hour devoted to pitchers. In the earlier portion of the pre-season, the team worked on flexibility and strength training. "I want to keep them working," says coach Burbules. Inexperience will be a factor in the Cubs season, with only two letter-winners returning. Due to last year's record, coach Burbules expects her squad to be underestimated by many op ponents. One of her goals is, "to gain respect." The coach went on to say she wants everyone to "play like a team. I want to get everybody to know each other's playing style." Coach Burbules thinks highly of the talent she has to work with. She listed a couple of the team's strengths as being a solid -infield and good defense. An added feature to college soft ball this year is a change in the distance between the pitcher's mound and home plate. Increasing the distance from 40 feet to 43 feet, Burbules sees this as a little more excitement potential added to the game. , Telephone. sports M. Madison Sue Holmes M. Madison Kim Erikson M. There is an opportunity for more offense, resulting in higher-scoring games." As the spring weather makes its first appearance, so will the Lady Cubs.
