Like Run-DMC or Big Audio
Dynamite, the Beastie Boys' music
is a collision of rock, rap, and
funk. The Beasties enhance the
rock part with wailing guitar riffs
that sometimes trick you into
believing that you're listening to
metal. Yet, a second later, the
music shifts into a full blown hip
hop beat, complete with scratching
and thumping bass lines. All this is

associated lyrics. Like most other
raps, the Beasties' banter deals
with issues of social importance
such as crime, drugs, and poverty.
But sometimes the Beasties bring
things in on a more personal level.
On "Fight for Your Right," fellow
Beasties complain "living at home
is such a drag, your mom threw
away your best porno mag." Other
lyrics describe the fun of getting
kicked out of White Castle or pick
ing up 'girlies' downtown.
Nonetheless, the two most
notable songs on the album are
"No Sleep Till Brooklyn" and
"Brass Monkey." "No Sleep till
Brooklyn" rocks because of guest
metal guitarist Kerry King. This is
probably the only serious rap-rock
song on the album. "Brass
Monkey" is either the name of the
Beastie Boys' favorite beer or the
caricature of the mug they drink
from. Either way, one can picture
the Beastie Boys writing "Brass
Monkey" while sitting around get

The sole clinker of "Licensed to

Mr. Ed is hacked and scratched in a
volatile rap fashion while the
Beasties' chant "What's the time?/
It's time to get ill."
Wilbur, are they serious?

Collegian Contributing Writer
If you were bored and without a
job last summer and are worried
about facing the same thing this
summer, or have no idea what
you'd like to do when you
graduate, the Army ROTC has an
obligation- free program for you.
The program is six weeks long and
is called ROTC Basic Camp. Not to
be confused with basic training,
also known as "Boot Camp,"
ROTC Basic Camp is shorter, con

attendees are under no obligation
to the Army and sign no contracts.
Basic training is 9-9 1 / 4 weeks long
and is attended by Army National
Guard and U.S. Army Reserve

It entails a multitude of military

military courtesy and customs.
This year's attendees will earn
over $7OO for their short visit to Ft.
