The Collegian December 12,1985 Page Twelve Cubs claw Thiel for first win by Jim Parachini Collegian Sports Editor After losing their first home game of the season at the buzzer sandwiched in between three losses by a combined total of 87 points, the Cubs finally tasted vic tory on Dec. 3 with a 75-71 Erie Hall triumph over Thiel College. Picking up the slack after Thiel’s women’s team had beaten the Lady Cubs, 79-59 earlier in the evening, Behrend needed four free throws in the final 41 seconds to earn the win. Senior Gary Manuel (game high 22 points) and Jim Webb each hit a pair of one-and-ones to give the Cubs the win and improve its record to (at press time) 1-4. Webb and sophomore forward Mike Siggins added 14 points apiece while junior center Randy Gomiak added 13 and a team high 10 rebounds. For the women in its loss to the Lady Tomcats, juniors Sue Holmes and Karen Yurchison each scored a game-high 18 points for Behrend (3-3) at press time. Among the past campaign’s highlights for the Lady Cubs was the capturing of the SUNY-Fredonia Tournament championship on Oct. 19. Now a final look at the past fall sports season at Behrend. Under the guidance of two-time District 18 coach-of-the-year and Behrend athletic director Herb Lauffer the men’s soccer team completed another successful campaign although the final 5-8-4 ledger might indicate otherwise. The Cub hooters scored 30 goals while yielding only 27 dur ing is 17-game schedule in addi tion to producing four all conference players. Those players cited were forwards Mike Hockenberger and Joe Kushon, defender Steve Lossing and senior captain and starting goalkeeper Larry Guenther. Behrend also knocked off two Division II schools with a home victory against Indiana University (Pa.), 3-2 on Sept. 11 and a road win against Edinboro University, 2-1 on Oct. 1. Pam Fischer’s women’s tennis team produced two all-conference players, Toni Lumley (3rd singles) and Melissa Mitchem (4th). The Lady Cubs finished ,5-7 including a home-opening 9-0 shutout of Thiel College back on Sept. 17. Looking ahead Here’s some New Year’s hopes in the world of sports: First of all lets hope that the Nittany Lions will whip Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s night to claim its se cond national championship in four years. Tins national title has the potential to be a bit sweeter than the first one because if Penn State wins it will be No. 1 with an undefeated record of 12-0. Three years ago when the Nit tany Lions won its first national championship Penn State finished 11-1, having lost in the regular season at Alabama, 42-21. Mark Malone, David Woodley and Scott Campbell are not the answer at quarterback for the Pit tsburgh Steelers. For Steeler fans lets hope that Chuck Knoll seriously looks into finding a new QB for Pittsburgh next year. ■sz? Sponsored by SG Ft. Lets also hope' that both hoop teams at Behrend have successful second-half campaigns and that each team can finish with at least a .500 record. Also continued success to the women’s softball team, the men’s baseball team under new coach Mike Folga and the men’s tennis squad during the upcoming spring sports season. sporls Two final predictions before I head off to University Park for the remainder of my stay at Penn State: Penn State 31, Oklahoma 17 (Penn State vs. Miami would have been a better game) and the Chicago Bears will NOT win Super Bowl XX to be played on Jan. 26.
