Pottorf Strikes for Perfection
by Rob Roth
Collegian Sports Writer
On April 2 Rich Pottorf did
what most bowlers only dream
about; he bowled a perfect 300
game.
When most average bowlers get
into the seventh and eighth frames
of what has been to that point a
perfect game, they usually suc
cumb to the pressure, but Rich
Pottorf did not. “It wasn’t easy
once I reached the latter frames,
but I kept my mind on the game, I

really concentrated,” Pottorf
said.
The intra-class tournament,
which took place during physical
education bowling class at
Eastway Lanes, is unfortunately
not officially sanctioned by the
American Bowling Congress, but
it will be remembered by all peo
ple involved.
Many spectators watched the
last of the 12 strikes in a row.
Karin Sobotta, class instructor
said, “1 got to Rich’s lane after

the second strike. The lanes were
in real good condition because
they had just been oiled, and Rich
just stayed very relaxed.”
Pottorf is. known locally as a
consistent bowler averaging in the
upper 170’s, but this was the first
time he had ever come close to a
300 game.
There is incredible pressure to
overcome in bowling a 300 game,
and when asked how he felt when
he saw the last pin drop Pottorf
responded, “I felt great, I was
really relieved.”
Bowling a 300 game has not,
however, guaranteed him an “A”
for the class as Sobotta tongue in
cheek mentioned, “I want him to
do it one more time so I can be
sure it wasn’t a fluke.”
