PAGE 6 Bruno’s Premiere A Success by Jill Bedford Collegian Staff Writer A large crowd attended Bruno’s nightclub opening night on Tues day, Feb. 5. The club was decorated with metallic streamers, multi-colored balloons, and small lighted candles were placed on the tables. Waiters attired in official Bruno’s designer T-shirts served patrons dishes of popcorn and non-alcoholic drinks including mai tais, pina coladas, daiquiris, bloody marys and grasshoppers were sold. Bruno’s main attraction was award-winning international entertainer Edward Jackman. Jackman entertained the crowd with juggling, balancing and im provisational comedy. Jackman juggled seven balls and later juggled a bowling ball, a sharp machete, and an apple simultaneously. He ended the show by juggling three clubs while balancing a ten-speed bicycle on his forehead. ~ Throughout his act, Jackman joked with the crowd and includ ed members of the audience in Davis’ Books Com by Judy Bush Collegian Staff Writer Have you ever been on an ar chaeological expedition to Ecuador? Or attempted to translate a sex scene from Dutch into English? Received huge en joyment from reading modem Japanese fiction? Dr. James Davis, Associate Professor of English, has done them all. Davis, who earned a Ph.d in English from the University of S. Mississippi, has published some 30 short stories. Soon to be published is a novella entitled Blackletter, and a book on Polish science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem. According to Davis, Stanislaw Lem has won world acclaim for his science fiction writing. It is curious to note that Lem’s recognitin in the U.S. comes from the wider literary circles, rather than science fiction circles. For example, his writing has been published in The New Yorker, rather than in science fic tion journals. “Lem,” says Davis, “is able to combine unusual human motiva tions and intellectual problems with science fiction. He avoids things that people usually look for FEATURE parts of his act. He was well received by the audience. Jackman, originally from Los Angeles, began juggling “for no particular reason. We had a grapefruit tree in our backyard,” he said, “and one day I just began juggling grapefruits. In one after noon I discovered I could juggle better than professionals I had seen on TV, so I kept practicing.” Jackman has won two juggling awards and is nominated for the Campus Comedy Entertainer of the Year. The only complaint of the even ing was that the show was a little short, running just an hour. Perhaps in the future the show can be lengthened by Behrend students interested in sharing their talents. Bruno’s (which derives its name from the dog once belonging to Mary Behrend, and whose grave is located in the Wilson Picnic Grove), is Behrend’s very own nightclub. The club, located iirtfte Gorge cafeteria, will be open Tuesday nights at 8 o’clock and will feature live entertainment. in science fiction, such as replays of a ‘cops and robbers’ in space sort of thing and soft-core por nography. He continued, “Lem’s work is considered literary and philosophical.” Dr. James Davis * Abortion asleep or awake Allegheny Women 9 s Center THE COLLEGIAN Cinderella continued from page 5 dependency myth and become the most they can be. He changed his major a few times, trying out Anthropology and English along the way. He earned his M.A. in Creative Writing at- the John Hopkins University where he studieed under writer John Barth. Dr. Davis has been with Behrend since the fall of 1979. He has taught basic writing courses along with business and technical writing. One class hie now teaches is fictional writing. His creativity is apparent as he combines it with quick humor to give the class ex amples of bad fiction; “as the man’s eyes crept around the" room” is one of his favorites. “And what,” Davis asks, “do you suppose the poor man is do ing in the meantime, running blindly into doors?” ‘Birth Control Medical Center East Bldg. 211 North Whitfield Street Pittsburgh, PA 15206 PHONE 412-362-2920 Mice- Capades INDOOR GAMES February 18 &22 ★ icjk **************************** 3 men, 3 women per tean Sign up at the Student Affairs Offic before 5:00 p.m. Feb. 18 ***** * ************************* Hundreds of dollars in prizes to be awarded.
