In the past three weeks, the
Women’s Volleyball team has in
creased their record to 19-10 and
have won a tournament.
On Oct. 20, the Cubs spiked the
University of Rochester 15-11 in
the Fredonia Tournament. In
their first match, Behrend trampl
ed Buffalo State 15-5, 15-2. Next,
the Cubs faced Westminster. They
split the first two games 15-3,
5-15, but Behrend won the third
and final game 15-12.
The Cubs also met Thiel Col
lege, a team that had beaten them
earlier in the season. This time it
was the Cubs turn to win and they
did, 15-7, 15-12.
After their successful display in
the tournament, the Lady Cubs
traveled to challenge Grove City,
a high-ranking NCAA Division
111 team. Behrend couldn’t score
more than eight points in the
game against Grove City,
resulting in a loss of 8-15.
However, Geneva- and Pitt-
Bradford, two important NAIA
matches for the Cubs, were both
Behrend victories.
On Oct. 30, the cubs trekked
across town to meet the Gannon
Knights. In pre-game warmups,
sophomore Julie Pletz dislocated
her knee. Without Pletz, the
Cubs were forced to rely on their
bench even more. Gannon came
through and won the first two
games 6-15, 10-15. Behrend came
back for the next two with scores

of 15-10 and 15-12. Gannon was
just too tough in the last game and
defeated Behrend 11-15.
Sophomore Julie DiFrancisco
compiled a 40 percent kill average
and served three aces against
Gannon. Renee Harrison and
Mary Toboz played with kill
averages of over 30 percent each.
Nov.l marked the final, home
game for the Cubs. They finished
the 1984 home campaign in style,
beating Westminster three games
to one. The Cubs dominated play
in the first two games, winning
15-8 and 15-9. Westminster took
the third game with a score of
10-15. The fourth game started
even, then Westminster racked up
six unanswered points for a 4-10
lead. Behind Colleen Kosack's
serving, the Cubs pulled within
three points. The two teams trad
ed points until the score was
10-13 with Westminster leading. It
was then that the Cubs showed
their stuff, getting the five points
necessary for the win. The final
point of the game was a coor
dinated effort by the team.
The Cubs played in the NAIA
District 18 playoffs, along with
Westminster, Waynesburg, and
Seton Hill this past weekend. The
ladies beat Westminster 15-7,
15-6, and 15-1. In the second
match Behrend came out on top
of a tough one 8-15, 15-9, 14-16,
15-10, and 15-10. This now earns
them the right to compete in the
regional playoffs to be held in
West Virginia.
