On Oct. 20, the Cubs spiked the University of Rochester 15-11 in the Fredonia Tournament. In their first match, Behrend trampl ed Buffalo State 15-5, 15-2. Next, the Cubs faced Westminster. They split the first two games 15-3, 5-15, but Behrend won the third and final game 15-12. The Cubs also met Thiel Col lege, a team that had beaten them earlier in the season. This time it was the Cubs turn to win and they did, 15-7, 15-12. After their successful display in the tournament, the Lady Cubs traveled to challenge Grove City, a high-ranking NCAA Division 111 team. Behrend couldn’t score more than eight points in the game against Grove City, resulting in a loss of 8-15. However, Geneva- and Pitt- Bradford, two important NAIA matches for the Cubs, were both Behrend victories. On Oct. 30, the cubs trekked across town to meet the Gannon Knights. In pre-game warmups, sophomore Julie Pletz dislocated her knee. Without Pletz, the Cubs were forced to rely on their bench even more. Gannon came through and won the first two games 6-15, 10-15. Gannon was just too tough in the last game and defeated Behrend 11-15. Sophomore Julie DiFrancisco compiled a 40 percent kill average and served three aces against Gannon. Renee Harrison and Mary Toboz played with kill averages of over 30 percent each. Nov.l marked the final, home game for the Cubs. They finished the 1984 home campaign in style, beating Westminster three games to one. The Cubs dominated play in the first two games, winning 15-8 and 15-9. Westminster took the third game with a score of 10-15. The fourth game started even, then Westminster racked up six unanswered points for a 4-10 lead. Behind Colleen Kosack's serving, the Cubs pulled within three points. The two teams trad ed points until the score was 10-13 with Westminster leading. It was then that the Cubs showed their stuff, getting the five points necessary for the win. The final point of the game was a coor dinated effort by the team. The Cubs played in the NAIA District 18 playoffs, along with Westminster, Waynesburg, and Seton Hill this past weekend. The ladies beat Westminster 15-7, 15-6, and 15-1. In the second match Behrend came out on top of a tough one 8-15, 15-9, 14-16, 15-10, and 15-10. This now earns them the right to compete in the regional playoffs to be held in West Virginia.
