SEPTEMBER 27, 1984 Commentary Young Engineering Student Loves Challenge by Thomas Martin Collegian Staff Writer I am a freshman in the college of engineering who, as many of you similar to me, have had a small taste of college life. I am taking the usual courses that most engineering students must take and have found the courses, the studying required, and the obligations of college a far cry from high school. The switch from high school life is not an easy process. Many of you have made this alteration Commentary Far From An Apology by Lisa Pavadore Collegian Staff Writer It seems that since I have been writing for the Collegian, my ar ticles have been filled with sar casm and cynicism. It has been said by a certain senior here that all I do is bi- that is, put Behrend down. At first, I thought I'd write an article describing all the positive facets of Behrend. However, as far as I am concerned, positive Editors News Editor Feature Editor Photography Editor Business Manager Advisor _ Elizabeth D'Augostine Kimberly Ford Paula Jeane Maus Thomas Milley Kevin Moore Mailing Address - Behrend Collegian, Station Road, Erie, PA 16563 Office located in Reed Union Building Office Hours - 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Monday through Friday Phone: 898-6220 Opinions expressed by the editors and staff of the Penn State-Behrend Collegian are not necessarily those of the University Administration, faculty, or the student body. OPINION and yet for some of you, it has been difficult. As for me, I am worried, but to some extent very content and satisfied. If you are the type of person who thrives on challenge, you're with me. Currently, my classes have not been as troublesome as I had expected, but since this - is only my first semester, it undoubtedly will not continue. Later on in college, particularly in the next few years, I will be fill ed to the eyeballs with challenges and new knowledge. Engineering aspects of Behrend are far and few between, and I also could not honestly write something I didn't believe in. If there are any of you who feel my articles are not entertaining or are out of line in any way, please talk to me in person or by writing to the paper. However, it seems that my articles are some of the only non-news articles, and their purpose is for entertainment. I understand this, and know that I must always be prepared and never underestimate. I know I may not be the most qualified or the most experienced of the engineering students, but I am in the position to relate to peo ple who are in the same situation that I am in. Most freshmen are told to Some people are pretty militant about defending Behrend, which is fine, but it's too bad they can't see that this place is not Utopia, and that the negative aspects that I write about do in fact exist, and it's also too bad they are too shallow to appreciate a sarcastic view of their surroundings. I hope there are people out there who enjoy my articles, and I will continue to express my opi nion in future issues. become involved, to study hard, and to have fun. We also have been told that you can have too much of a good thing. But here's some new advice: Try to enjoy your classes and if at all possible, make an attempt to look forward to the new challenges your courses can create. I have always survived with fly ing colors in classes where I couldn't get enough information. Of course, there will be classes that no one but the professor loves, and for those classes, at least try to find something in teresting you like about them. If the course is so terrible that you cannot even do that, then study it, APPLICATION FOR COLLEGIAN STAFF POSITION Position Desired Related Experience Con You Type' Yes What Are Your Reasons For Applying) Return this opplicotion to the R.U.B. desk marked Attention Collegian. This advice may not be the best for you, but if you're like me, challenges could be a blessing in disguise, and the real horrors are the unchallenging, uninteresting classes. For those of you in engineering, remember, we are a special breed (those of us who survive). Even those of you who may leave or already have left the engineering field at least you will leave with experience - the experience of self discipline. This is a necesary skill which will help you in almost everything you do in your college studies. Address PAGE
