PAGE 8 Intramural Update by Michael Coursey Spring is finally here, thus signalling the end of another school year and the culmination of another fine year of In tramural sports at Penn-State Behrend. I spoke with Duane Crider, our Director of In tramural Athletics at Behrend and he reported that this year has had a record number of par ticipants in I.M. Sports. From The Sports Editor by Michael Coursey With the end of the semester looming nearer I would like to make some predictions for the up coming major league season, plus predictions for the NBA, NHL and USFL. I don't have any nicknames like "The Greek" or "Dandy Don," but I've won a few sport bets in my day. My choices or predictions are as follows: MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (Division Pennant) A.L. EAST Detroit A.L. WEST N.L. WEST California Atlanta World Series: Pittsburgh vs. Detroit NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION (Championship) New York Knick's will face the Portland Trailblazers in the Championship game. The Knicks will win in six or seven games. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE (Stanley Cup) The New York Islanders will win their fifth Stanley Cup this year. UNITED STATES FOOTBALL LEAGUE (Conference Champs) EASTERN WESTERN CONFERENCE CONFERENCE Atlantic Central New Jersey Houston Southern N. Orleans A problem that has been very apparent to many students, staff I.M. Volleyball has had a suc cessful season and I.M. Softball will be underway as soon as the weather breaks. The deadline for tennis entries is April 12, with Ultimate Frisbee Competi tion deadline set at April 13. Finally, it's time to break out your running shorts and par ticipate in the SIXTH AN NUAL, PENN STATE BEHREND "RUN FOR FUN." and faculty here is a lack of a quality athletic-fitness facility on campus. Many of my classmates (myself included) spend valuable time and money to use athletic facilities; such as the YMCA, health clubs, spas etc., because the facilities here are mediocre at best. Trying to battle with the athletic teams to use Erie Hall or dilapidated conditions of the weight room, make attempting a good workout, a very trying ex perience. The amount of time that the gymnasium is open for general purposes is very limited. Com pounded with a severe winter climate, attempting a car diovascular beneficial exercise (running, swimming, racquetball, etc.) is very difficult during the winter months. It seems with the emphasis our society puts on physical fitness, that a tax supported Land Grant University such as Penn-State Behrend, N.L. EAST Pittsburgh could provide an adequate health fitness center for its students and faculty. Millions don't have to be spent either. Money spent economical ly, thoughtfully and wisely could vastly improve the weightroom and wrestling room among other areas. Plus a lightweight, syn thetic structure, (similar to the one at the Eastside YMCA) could enhance Behrend's pool use to year round. Much is being done to make Behrend a more attractive and comfortable place to "ex perience" college. The ad ministration seems to be whole heartedly supporting the "whiz kids," just don't forget about the Phys Ed Majors and the "Ironmen." Pacific Los Angeles THE BEHREND COLLEGIAN The runs will consist of two distances, 3,000 and 10,000 meters. It's slated for Saturday, April 28, starting at 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. at the Behrend Cam pus. There are seven different age categories ranging from 12 and under to 50 and over, plus one Behrend Students and one for Behrend Staff-Alumni. Register by April 20 in order to receive a complimentary T shirt (those registered late will not receive one). Awards will be given to the first three finishers in each male and female category. They will be awarded at the Wilson Picnic Pavillion. Entry forms are availabe throughout Campus or at Erie Hall. Inquires should be made to Duane Crider at 898-1511, ext. 239. Cubb by Michael Coursey The Penn State-Behrend Baseball team split their opener with University of Pittsburgh-Bradford. _They lost the opener by a score of 7-2,. but battled back in the nightcap to win 6-5. This was the first time the ball team has been on the field this year due to inclement weather. Coach Joe Spinelli is optimistic about his ball club, but knows this is a young team loaded with freshman, thus inexperience could hinder the cubs. But with a lot of hustle, determination and executive of fundamentals, they could have a surprising season.
