Hong Kong In 1977 By D. Regis Brown Any student having taken a micro or macro economics course is aware of the fact that economics is a social science. It is a science in which the fundamen tal concern is the way a society chooses to use its limited resources for present and future consumption. We as Americans tend to see only our own present economic situation and do very little to educate ourselves- on the economies throughout the world. It is interesting to know that an important event which has not yet become a major concern in the world media is going to take place in the year 1997. The occurance of this event could very well be one of the most significant economic STUDENT OPINION "Who Would You Like For The U.S. Presidency?" STUDENT OPINION: "WHO WOULD YOU LIKE FOR U.S. PRESIDENT?" 1) Julie Babay (2nd Semester DUS) "I would like to see Gary Hart as our next President. I believe he is more in touch with the "New Generation" of Americans and their new ideas. He is not a part of the old Democratic Party line, plus he reminds me of John F. Kennedy." 2) Sid Draper (sth Semester Comm) "Bozo's my Choice! Society Treasure Rhonda Thompson expects imminent ap proval of the $4200 request. Club Secretary Mark Fairchild, who asked that his name be withheld, said that winners have already been announced in the 10 minor categories. "It will be our first yearbook since 1978," said Lane. "We tried to emphasize the fact that turnabouts since the creation of OPEC. . - ' As you may know, Hong Kong is a British Crown Colony. This of course was not always the case. Hong Kong came to be a British Crown Colony as a result of the treaty of Nanking, which was signed at the end of the Opium War between Britain and China. Part of the agreement in the treaty of Nanking was that Britain would lease Hong Kong for ninety nine years. ' In the year 1997 the lease is up and Hong Kong, the fragrant port, will become the valuable real estate of the Peoples Republic of China. The implications of this are great; today Hong Kong is the third largest container port in the real clown do the job the other clowns are doing. Also, remember to vote!" 3) Greg Vilabona (sth Semester, History) "I support Ronald Reagan. I think he has done a good job as President. Plus, unemployment is declining and his reforms can be developed- in another four years." 4) Steve Grab (2nd Semester -DUS) "Ronald Reagan. Although present reforms make it seem the rich get richer and the poor get .year," said Fairchild. - "There was such an incredible number of misspellings around campus that we had - to double the number of judges." . Kate said that it's ."kind of nervewracking, not being able to see the. finished project until it - THE BEHREND COLLEGIAN world. To put it into perspective, Hong Kong is a free enterprise capitalistic society, the Peoples Republic of China on the other hand, is communist. Certainly there are advantages for China in allowing Hong Kong to remain a free enterprise colony. China does one third of her trade there every year. I think it is safe to say, however, that after the year 1997, Hong Kong will not be what it is today. This of course is speculation on my part, as to the future of Hong Kong? Well, read the papers, listen to the BBC, don't watch TV or buy real estate there without research, and try to pick up some information on the side. Hong Kong is an interesting economic study. poorer; with more time, I feel that reforms already in progress should make the economy in the eyes of the lower class more appealing." 5) Sharon Phillips (Bth Semester Combs) "The lesser of two evils!" 6) Jim Owens (7th Semester Physical Science) "Reagan. Newest Club member, Sean Grape, commenting on the awards, said "I find the entire awards procedure to be vicious, nasty, and not at all nice. Of course, that's the- primary reason we did it in the first place." Newly elected SFFS President Doug Marsh and Terry Emigh denied all knowledge of the Il literacy Awards, his presidency, and Chicken McNuggets. goes on sale. The computer invasion has finally hit home. The library has sprouted terminals that seem straight out Of Star Wars. Would be "hackers" now have access to the Library Information Access System, or LIAS. LIAS is a computer listing of all the available books and publica tions in the Penn State Library System. One must only type the command "search," and either the author, title or subject wanted. The screen then prints out a list with the desired informa tion. When the specific item desired is spotted, the number is entered. Now the screen shows the Hong Kong-1984 Reagan feels could be limited. I think Mondale is better than Hart because of his experience and I think he really wants to lower the deficit and help people get jobs and a good diet." 9) Leroy Jones "I've been poor all my life and Reagan's made more people poor and that makes me feel better, because I'm not the only one standing in line for cheese now." Interviews conducted by Michael Coursey card catalogue listing with the call letters and campus location of the chosen book. Penn State hopes to someday do away with the traditional card catalogue and rely totally on LIAS. Until then, however, both the LIAS terminals and the tradi tional manual method will remain in service. The LIAS terminals are on dur ing library hours every day and have simple directions located on the wall behind the terminals. They are located immediately to the left upon passing through the turnstiles into the library. The LIAS is a good way for those un familiar with computers and how they can be used to gain hands-on experience with something that is here to stay, computers in every day applications. PAGE 3
