DECEMBER 8, 1983 Campus Ministry "Trying To By: Phyland Robertson "We're an ecumenical ministry, here to serve students, faculty, and staff," said Pamela Griesbach, the coordinator of Penn State-Behrend's Campus Ministry, in a recent Collegian in terview. "Our activities include counseling, seminars, cultural events, Bible studies, worship ser vices, films," and various other projects. Behrend's Campus Ministry, according to Ms. Griesbach, has been extremely successful. "We've been here one full calen- SFFS Announces Writing Contest By: P. Robertson The Science Fiction and Fan tasy Society of Penn State - Behrend is sponsoring a "science fiction and fantasy writing" con test, according to SFFS President Bill HiHiker. "Most people who enjoy reading science fiction tend to try to write it," said Bill. "We're offering this contest to give people that chance." First prize will be a $25 gift cer tificate from B. Dalton Bookstore, in the Millcreek Mall. The winning story will also be published in TEMPUS, the stu dent literary magazine of "Merry Christmas To All.. . By: Lisa Pavadore Here comes Christmas With this season come many thoughts. Thoughts such as: ideas for presents, decorating the tree, and who had the scotch tape last - and where did they put it? Even though Christmas has become very• commercialized, I still believe that people value something much more than those gifts, and that is each other. I mean, it is noticeable how people are kinder toward each other, and how they make a sincere effort to cease the arguing. It is at this time of year when even the hardest of people seem to soften. The only problem with Christmas is that many times families spend beyond their means to please one another. It's our way of showing our parents, sisters and brothers how much we care. Well, all of that is fine, but how much you spend on each other is not really important. The most valuable gift we can give to each other cannot be bought, and it has a lifetime guarantee.. . When the trials and tribulations of everyday life find you cursing one another; When you feel you're living amidst chaos, confusion, and madness- Stop. Stop and see • that you have each other. A family is what so many " so many take for granted. Student Opinion: "What Are Your Feelings On The Equal Rights Amendment?" "What are your feelings about the Equal Rights Amendment? Becky Fuller (Ist semester„ Psychology) "ERA is a good thing, but some people take it to an extreme. Everyone should have equal rights under the law. Women should have the same job opportunities and same pay rates, because there are a lot of single mothers who need the money as much as a man." Sharon Ross (Ist semester, Forest Science) "I'm not for passage. Basically, the only aspect of the Show God In The Midst Of People's Lives. . ." dar year now. Other colleges are using our Campus Ministry as a model for their Campus Ministries." One reason for this success, said Ms. Griesbach, is that "Behrend's Ministry has six clergy. That covers a pretty wide area." The clergy currently par ticipating in Behrend's Campus Ministry include: The Rev'd Dave Dobrowolski (Roman Catholic), the Rev'd Jeffrey Hamblin (Episcopal), the Rev'd Martin Roth (Lutheran), the Rev'd Behrend- Depending upon the number of entries, a $lO second prize may also be awarded. "The contest is open to all students of Behrend. Stories will be judged on quality 'of writing, orginality, and content and should be either fantasy or science fiction," said Bill. All entries should be typed and double spaced, and contain the author's name, address, phone number, and student number. The entries must be submitted before January 31,.1984, and should be turned in at the RUB desk. And it is enough. ERA I do agree with is equal pay for equal jobs. My belief is that the man should be the head of the -household. We were created dif ferently, but I don't believe one is better than the other." Ray Harris (7th semester, Political Science) "I'm in favor of it- It should have passed. Without it, there is discrimination in the job market. Pay scales aren't even; women do the same jobs as men, but aren't compen sated equally." Addressing her own function, Ms. Griesbach stated "I don't ac tually do the ministry. My job is to try to coordinate the ministries of the six clergy, and tie the pro grams together. I'm not faculty or staff of Penn State-Behrend. The clergy pay my salary, and our pro grams are funded by Inter- Judging will be done by a panel consisting of 2 faculty members and 1 student, and their decision is final. The winners will be notified by phone before February 15th. "This is not only an opportuni ty to promote the SFFS," said Bill, "This is also an opportunity for our members to see who else on campus is interested in science fiction and fantasy." "We're trying to show God in the midst of people's lives, here on campus.". Ms. Griesbach pointed to the recent "Night of the Arts," which Campus Ministry sponsored, as an example. "God gives each of us gifts in life," she said. "Some of us are musicians. Some are ar tists. Just as some are teachers Is this really what a dorm room looks like? Signed, A Commuter Colloquium Held Wednesday Senior Communication majors who have completed their Senior projects, internships, and in dependent studies were to present their findings at the first com munication colloquium Wednes day evening in the Memorial Room of the Administration Building. Among those students who par ticipated were Kevin Still who discussed the results of a Senior project in which he analyzed the correlation between leadership traits of outstanding Behrend students and group members perceptions of these leaders. But I feel that the ERA is not fulfilling God's plan, because it reaffirms abortion rights, and establishes homosexual rights," Pam Wood (Ist semester, Mathematics) "I'm for passage. Men and women should be considered equal. Women are discriminated against at work and and some are students." "We hope students will take advantage of the counseling ser vices and programs we provide," said Ms. Griesbach. "Our goal is to be God's silent witness in an academic community." ERA would help pro mote a feeling of equality between the sexes, which in the long run, will benefit everyone." Sue Rupp (3rd semester, Finance) "ERA is a good idea, but at the same time, it's going to prove to be difficult to adjust to. I think women will find, that with ERA, the workforce will be tougher to function in; If passed, I think you're going to have some very surprised feminists."
