PAGE 8 Intramural Activities For by Dunne Crider This year's beautiful fall weather contributed to the success of this semester's major in tramural outdoor season. The number of teams entered in slow pitch softball (27) made it ap parent that the season change from spring to fall did not detract from the activity. The weather was better, and the fields were in better condition. The total number of par ticipants in slow pitch softball reached 340 individuals. There were many outstanding teams, but the two men's teams that made it into the finals, were the Stars and the Icemen. After seven innings of play, the Icemen emerged with a 7-6 victory. The women's league was dominated by one lone team; Bowl Games Ride On PSU-Pitt Game by Tom Miller Well, it's getting to be that time of the year again, when you can feel your emotions start to erupt for the upcoming Penn State - Pitt football game. Both teams need an impressive win in order to get a decent bowl bid. Penn State, coming off a win over Brown this past weekend, improved their record to 6-4 with two games remaining on their schedule. This win made it possi ble for Penn State to achieve its 45th consecutive winning season. Pitt, on the other hand, was just as impressive with a victory over Notre Dame. Penn State will play Notre Dame this coming week end. This game will be very crucial for the Lions, because a loss will ruin their chances for a bowl bid. Pitt's next encounter will be Army. In my opinion, this game should be an easy victory for Pitt. Looking at the Penn State - Pitt game from a basis of • PRE-MEDS INFORMPTIoNa. They accumulated overwhelming victories such as their final playoff game over the Rookies by the score of 26-2. In flag-football however, the Devils were not to have it so easy. They eventually won this cham pionship too, but not without a close final with the Greyhound Express, final score in that game was 7-0. While the Devils were looking ahead to their soccer champion ship, the men's flag-football playoffs were beginning. The six teams present for the playoffs were the Icemen, Units, B.C. 69ers, TANG, Stoneheads, and Gnats. The B.C. 69ers eliminated the Units, as TANG was edged out by the Stoneheads. In the game that followed, the Icemen defeated the B.C. 69ers and pro- who they beat, I would have to go with Penn State because they upset two of the top ten teams in the nation. Looking at who will be favored to win the game, I would have to say Pitt, because they are currently ranked among the top twenty teams in the nation. The Lions and Panthers will be out to win, that's for sure, but who to pick to win is up for grabs. I'll leave it up to you. If you plan on going to the game and don't have a ticket, the game is already sold out and won't be televised locally. Some alumni of the universities that I've talked to, have come up with an alternative on how to_ see the game. These alumni plan on traveling to Pittsburgh and ren ting a motel room so they can watch the game on a local Pitt sburgh station from their room. Now that is what I call a devoted fan! . . The final game was a tug-of-war between two very fine offensive teams. The final score of the game came from the Icemen with no time on the clock. The ball went through the arms of a defender and was caught in the endzone br inging the Icemen to their second I.M. Championship. The final score was Icemen 30, Stoneheads 25. Soccer season came late to Behrend Intramurals, but even late, the participation was very good. The women's teams were few in number, one team dropp ing out before the season was begun. The winning team was chosen through head to head com petition. Once again, the Devils emerged the champions and the very skillful V.E.D.S. had to set tle for second place. The women who participated were a credit to women's intramurals. Their season would have been much longer and more enjoyable to all participants had the one team not dropped out. The women on cam pus and off should be encouraged to participate regularly in all ac tivities. Experience on high school teams is not a prerequisite for competition. The men's soccer league was. comprised of eight teams, each possessing a few individuals who were highly skilled. Of these eight, however, four made the playoffs. These teams were the Icemen, Zska Sofia, The Hurtin Units, and the Kamikazi's. Scores were very close in these final games. The championship game was played during a noon time snow shower. The outcome did not require a shoot-odt as many of the past games have. The show deals with the operations, management, and personal lives of an AA minor league baseball team. The show airs at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays. NBC paid 13 million dollars for 13 shows before even selecting a cast or seeing a preview. The sta tion also built a 1000 plus seat stadium for the show to be filmed in, that only cost 500,000 dollars. The show was created by the writers of Hill Street Blues and shares many of the characteristics of the latter. Like Hill Street, at the very beginning, the show is doing poorly in the television ratings; but the producers expect that to change once the public becomes familiar with the type of show and storyline. The strong point of the show is its realism. The producers studied' the environment and lives involv ed in a minor league franchise for a year. This type of research has helped inform the public of the life a minor league team actually experiences. When the cast was assembled, the majority of the people had never played baseball past the high school level. Because of this, the cast was put through an exten sive training program to prepare them for the show. Included in the cast is the owner of the team, who owns a used car dealership. The personality of the manager is that of 'Joe Torre, who manages the Atlanta Braves. The team also sports a pretty good Blue Bird CHURCH 1.~ ~1 i tj Vjl r l ii ►" i 1.14 .' if A Good Show!! by Joel Campbell Sports Editor ST. JAMES R.C. CHURCH 2635 Buffalo Road Erie, Pa.
