PAGE 4 Behrend To Face Grove City Cubs Down U.P.B. By Joel Campbell Sports Editor The Behrend soccer team set a new school record for goals scored with seventeen against Pitt-Bradford on October 12. The old school record was twelve set against Duquesne. Behrend won that game, 17-1. Coach Lauffer said, "Both teams deserve a lot of credit. Pitt- Bradford played hard and ag gressive. I didn't have to worry about our players getting injured due to the possibility of Bradford playing dirty soccer, and their goalie made several good saves." Scoring in the game went as follows: Steve Andrews scored three goals and three assists, Jamie Kreber had three goals and two assists, Ed Bell had three goals, Tom Mandl had two goals and three assists, Terry Mannery had two goals and an assist, Bob MacZura had two goals, Chip Downes scored a goal and an assist, Joel Bucicwalter had a goal, and Tom Kennard, Al Jones, and Dave McCraken all had an assist. Behrend dropped a tough 1-0 loss to nationally ranked St. Vin cent on October 9. St. Vincent brought an NAIA number nine ranking nationally and 10-0-0 record into the game. The Cubs played well enough to win accor ding to Lauffer. St. Vincent scored during the first five minutes of the second half. Lauffer said, "We were not aggressive at the start of the se cond half. We only played five bad minutes in the whole game." Lauffer went on to add, "We were coming off of two frustrating games against Pitt- Johnstown and Edinboro." Behrend had now played three key games in which they record ed an 0-2-1 record. The Cubs dropped a 2-1 loss to Edinboro on October 5. • Lauffer said, "There were two keys to the game. Number one, we were still suffering from our tie against UPJ. Number two, we scored our first goal too easy." Edinboro picked up after the goal and scored halfway into the period. The half ended in a 1-1 tie. Edinboro then scored ten minutes into the second half. Lauffer said, "After scoring so easily in the first half, our players felt this would be an easy game. After that, we had good scoring opportunities but we just didn't cash in." Chip Downes scored on an unassisted. Mid-fielder Joel Buckwalter was out of the game with an injury. During homecoming weekend, Behrend battled Pitt-Johnstown to a 0-0 tie. Lauffer said, "This was one of the best games we've played. We got off to a good start and improved as the game continued." Lauffer added, "One man from UPJ got red carded. Then UPJ got even stronger with one less man. This became very frustrating for us." Ed Bell bit the post in the first half, along with many other scor inf;Tportunities. Leading scorers to date are Bell with seven goals and one assist for 15 points, and Kreber has five goals and four assists for 14 points. Buckwalter has four goals and one assist for nine points, Mac- Zuna has- two goals and two assists for six points, and Ken nard has one goal and two assists for four points. ST. JAMES R.C. Coach Wilson stated, "Our record may not be what we ex pected it to be, but I think we've played the toughest part of our schedule. In the past two weeks, we've played the top three teams in Western Pennsylvania. Those teams are Slippery Rock, Edin boro (advanced to nationals the past two years), and Grove City (winner of the W.K.C. crown the past two years). We lost all three matches, but we put up a heck of a fight in all of them and I think it was a good learning experience Athletic Department Fund Raiser By Joel Campbell To order a shirt, stop in and see The Behrend athletic depart- coach La uffer or any of ment is selling surfer shifts (tee Behrend's athletic coaches. shirts with long sleeves) in Erie Shirts may also be ordered by Hall. - stopping in at the Erie Hall office. There, the Cubs manag ed one win, two losses, and one tie and a 10th place finish out of 16 strong teams. Considering the op pmition it was a pretty good day for the Lady Cubs. Two other tough opponents Behrend lost to were Mercyhurst and Waynesburg. Against Mer cyhurst, the Cubs lost 3 to 0, but Waynesburg was a 2 to 1 heart breaker. When asked about the Waynesburg match, Captain Nat Kuhn stated, „."We should've never lost to Waynesburg. We killed them in the first game, but then we just fell apart.
