I can see that profoundness is one of your character strengths, because what you're trying to say is beyond me. First, I am an American citizen, and thus part of this country, so wouldn't Reagan not only be helping me but millions of students of higher education by maintaining the current funds allotted to education? Second, what about the work Don't Write The Lions Off By Joe O'Keeffe Collegian Sports Editor Penn State, previously top ranked and undefeated, traveled to Miami last Saturday, but drop ped to the 19th ranked Hur ricanes.- Is Penn State yet another victim of the top-ranked team to suffer a loss to an under dog, you ask? Certainly. Michigan was the preseason pick for No. 1, then Notre Dame, then Southern California (for the longest time this year all of three weeks!), then Texas, and yes, eventually Penn State. All of these teams now have little chance of becoming football champions this year. Is Penn State likely to go down with the rest of this crowd? Not at all. Joe Paterno is now directing his team to their finest season in years. Statistically, they are awesome: fourth ranked in rushing offense, fifth in scoring offense, and sixth in total defense. Curt Warner was the na tion's third-best before Saturday. Ah, the Miami game, you say. Granted, the Lions had oodles of opportunities to score. Yet they failed to score until four minutes The Bartender Says By John Skrzypczak "This is a free country, as long as you do what they .say." Somebody told me that once. I'm not sure if it was the paperboy or some bartender. Anyway, I was reading in "Life,"or something like that, that on a college campus in Virginia it is against regulations for Catholics to have or hold any meetings on campus. This may be a Baptist college, but at that same campus Gay Rights people have the right to organize and demonstrate. There is a definite inconsisten cy here. How about the 55 MPH speed limit? Is it constitutional or not? The people of Wyoming say no. How about right here in Erie? The City of Erie passed a pro fi ts tax law on local businesses. It ing man? Don't many "working men" have children in college? Wouldn't it be beneficial to these "working men" to get some financial help for their children's education, so they could have that money to buy more essential items (i.e. food, shelter, and shoes). Third, I have two jobs, Frank. Also, I'm taking 12 credits this term, and I'm co-editor of the Collegian; thus, I don't have any more time to invest on your dare. Thanks for your letter. gone of the final period. Conse quently, State came up short, 14-17. But by no means does this loss suggest the ironmen from Happy Valley are out of the runn ing for the national championship. You might point to PSU's schedule. After N.C. State this weekend, the Lions take on Alabama (remember 1979?), Notre Dame, and of course, that annual matchup with Pitt. These schools are tough boys by any measure. You might say that Pitt has the best chance to capture the cherished "Number One" spot. Maybe, considering none of their remaining opponents had better than .500 records last year. Except, Penn State, naturally. Paterno's boys are hungry, and certainly want to avenge Satur day's loss. Neither Paterno nor, Rip Engle nor any other Nittany mentor has ever won a national championship. But should the Lions topple, their upcoming foes, State College, just may well own that coveted "Number One" ranking after all. said, "Businesses had to pay tax on their profits." Some businesses refused to pay saying, "it was unconstitutional." Well, good for them. Because it was un constitutional. Erie had to pay back all that money. The main problem here is that, in the understanding of the Con stitution, our freedoms, and what are our rights are all becoming blurred. It's getting to the point where you can't even trust the Secretary of State anymore (he thinks he takes the place of the President when the President is not able to fulfill his duties). What can be done? Rewrite the Constitution? I don't think so.. Maybe, a little less in-depth in terpretation of it though too many tricky laywers and word juggling interpreters going around nowadays. BEHREND COLLEGIAN Letters To The Editor I DARE YOU TO PRINT THIS EDITORIAL REPLY Who are you to cry about lack of free money? President Regan, (sic) is trying to help this coun try, not put you through college. I can see that shortsightedness is one of your character strengths. Say you get your money, say everyone who wants money gets it. You want to go to school to get a well-paying job. Well, by the time you finish your government financed education there isn't go ing to be any job for you. You need that money to go to school. What about the working man? He needs money to clothe his children. He needs money to get food on the table. He needs the money he works for every day to pay his taxes and support his family. What he doesn't need is the added tax burden of putting you through school. Did you ever think of that? Did you ever consider that the hand out you're crying for could be used to feed someone instead? Maybe to put shoes on his feet, or a roof over his head? If you're really that set on go ing to school then maybe you'll have to do something you're not thrilled about; something that you fear in the recesses of your mind. Maybe you should GET A JOB. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you like that. Frank Grzegorgzewski Behrend Students: A recent Gallup poll reported that 90 per cent of the American people interviewed believed in an afterlife and only 10 per cent of those people believed they were in any danger of going to Hell. I wonder how many have even bothered to open up a Bible to find out if there are any re quirements in order to get to Heaven. Do you know the Bible says God requires you to be holy and pure before you can see Him? The Bi ble was written over a time span of thousands of years on three dif ferent continents, in three languages: yet the theme is un changing from Genesis to Revelation holiness and total obedience to God. Moral values and standards may change, but the word of the Lord will stand forever. • The Bible says, "No immoral, impure or greedy person such a man is an idolater has any in heritance in the kingdom of God and Christ. Let no one deceive you with empty words for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient," (Ephesians 5:5-6). The tragic error of many peo ple today is they compare themselves with other men and decide they are as good or better. So, they conclude they are sure to make it to Heaven. If you know you are a sinner, God can save you from sin that leads to eternal destruction. Jesus Christ is the one who will save you. He took the penalty for our sin, which is death, when lie died on the cross. He ransomed us from Hell but we have to live our lives for Him. When we come to him for forgiveness we must repent. Repentance means to turn from sin. When we repent God gives us His Holy Spirit to enable us to be holy. We'll never save ourselves; we need to turn to the Savior Jesus Christ. God is truly forgiving, but He is also just. Today is the day that we turn from sin and live for God. When we stand before God it will be too late to say you're sorry.
