Behrend offers various activities There is nothing to do at Behrend, you say? Dorm life is dull, you say? Commuting ex cludes you from the Behrend community, you say? Well, make yourself available for the events coming up within the next three weeks. Student Union Manager and Activities Coordinator Chris Reber has announced the schedule of events cultural (pianist Robert Edwards) and otherwise (Three Stooges Film Festival) to take place from now until October 11. The calendar begins this weekend when Bebrend whips in to a 'Punk Party', sponsored by the Joint Residence Council. The party will be in the Gorge Com muter Cafeteria 'Friday starting at 11 p.m. This Saturday, the Outing Club is sponsoring a canoe trip on the Clarion River. The bus leaves Bebrend at 6 p.m. that night and returns home late Sunday. Also on Saturday,.the 'Weekend Cinema' series will present 'The Omega Man' at 9 p.m. in the Reed Lecture Hall. For those of you on the Clarion River, the film will be repeated Sunday at 9 p.m. Next Monday, September 28, the Student Union Board presents the first program in the Cultural Series. Hypnotist James Mapes will present "PSI A Journey Into The Imagination" in the Reed Lecture Hall at 8 p.m. Mapes, who has appeared in TV and film notably, Star Trek, Gunsmoke, and the movie Taxi Driver creates in his show "a furturistic outerspace fantasy that comes to life when audience volunteers are hypnotized to become the stars of the show." Mapes has given over 1,000 per formances in the last five years and was recently named "Cam pus Entertainer of the Year." Later next week on Thursday, October 1, an expert on political extremism, Gordon Hall, will present a program on his special ty in the Reed Lecture Hall. Time will be announced. The same day, Joan Martin of the Erie Rape Crisis Center will present a film and lecture beginn ing at 7 p.m. in the. Lecture Hall. On Saturday, October 3, the emphasis shifts to Main Campus, the site of the annual "All-U- Day." Football and a rock con cert are highlights this year, with the Nittany Lions hosting Temple Station Road, Erie, Pa. 16563 at Beaver Stadium, and the Atlanta Rhythm Section perform ing later that day. Students from all branch campuses of Penn State will be there for this one. The Weekend Cinema program will also be presented October 3 for those who miss the bus to University Park. "Moby Dick", starring Gregory Peck will roll in the Reed Lecture Hall starting at 9 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday nights. The second installation of the Student Union Board's Cultural Series will feature "The Pocket Mime", an innovative mime group. They'll perform in Erie Hall at noon and at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6. On October 7, Bebrend will see Tom Parks at 8 p.m. in Reed Hall. Parks' brand of humor is billed as educational comedy, and he too has performed exten sively through the college circuit. Admission to this event will be $2.00 or $1.50 with Activity card. Friday, October 9 marks the opening night of Behrend Theater's first performance of the school year. `Cwions Savage' will be performed in the Studio Theater, where the 80 to 90 available seats cannot help but ACS: Free tutoring One of the services Behrend College offers its students is free tutoring. This year, the services fall under the auspices of the Academic Services Center, located on the second floor of the Administration Building. The center, opened last spring, provides students with in dividualized attention, specializ ing in English and math. Help is available for math courses from the remedial level to Math 162. English instruction covers all levels, with special em phasis on freshman composition courses, such as English 10 and 20. Dr. Dean Baldwin, assistant professor of English and cor dinator of the project, said that in addition to these subjects, help would also be given in areas which may be unfamiliar to freshman, yet play an important role in academic performance. Areas here include improved comprehension in reading, study habits, note taking, and time Recruiters visit campus A number of companies will be making recruitment visits to the Behrend Placement Office this week and next. Students who are planning to graduate soon are invited to par ticipate in the On-Campus Recruitment Program. Sign-up sheets are available in the Placement Office, located in the Student Af fairs Office, 2nd floor Reed. The deadline for signing up is one week prior to the interview date for that particular company. Students are required to file an Interview Request form with the Placement Office, also one week prior to the interview. Although transcripts are not required, it is suggested that an official copy be filed with the Placement Office for the convenience of the recruiters. Sept. 24 Oct. 6 Oct. 8 make the viewer feel a part of the performance. The show runs Fri day through Sunday with curtain at 8 p.m., and a special matinee Sunday at 2:30 p.m. For the music aficionado, pianist Robert Edwards will per form in the Reed Lecture Hall Saturday, October 8. Critic Joseph Horowitz of the New York Times has called an Edwards' performance, "a pleasure to listen to ... a performance com manding respect." Sunday, October 11 rounds out the schedule of activities. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 23, 1981 management. Dr. Baldwin especially en couraged students to stop by if they felt what they were reading wasn't 'sinking in.' Although the services are free, Dr. Baldwin said that the Academic Services Center is for `legitimate help only,' and that they will not for example, proofread papers to check for misplaced commas. Other faculty involved with the Academic Services Center in clude Mr. Michael Chiteman (English), Mrs. Marjorie Podolsky (English), and Mr. David Heyd (Math). Located temporarily in the Dean's Conference Room on the second floor of the Administra tion Building, the center is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 5:30.
