Remember all those zany, neat
stunts college students used to
do? If they weren't all piling into
Volkswagens, or telephone
booths, they were eating
disgusting amounts of goldfish,
making the non-college goers
rather doubtful of Americas
youth.
Well, some good old boys from
Behrend have, •in their own
gluttonous way, revived a little,
weirdness in college life. Mr.
Charles Hobbs, Mr. Gregory
Cannon, Mr. Lee Campbell, Mr.
David Costozo and Mr. Dan Sochs
slurped their way, into South
American coffee growers' hearts
by downing over 80 cups of

didn't know whether to shake all
their hands or - shake my own
head in disgust... All 5 live in the

A special thanks to all the folks
who contributed to the mess and
slime that accumulated on the
hill outside Lawrence Hall and
Dobbins. I haven't seen a slum in
a while and it made me yearn to
see West Side Story again. Well,
there goes the neighborhood.
As Mr. Carter, the Congress
and many war mongering in
dividuals lick their chops over the
Afghanistan conflict, I ask,
"Which - way to the nearest
conscientious objector form. . "
It-doesn't seem like too many
students know what their doing
when it comes to making out
schedules and what a course
involves. On the days of
February 4 and 5 an estimated
200 students dropped a course. /
heard one student say after
dropping a class, "I had a 95 per
cent in it and I was just getting
too band. Excuse me."
Happy Valentines Day.

ROTC Col. Claims
"Back in 1970 we had 360
students in our unit and with all
the unrest on campus we felt
lucky to have that many," Cc d.
Robert Rose, Professor of
Military Science for the Army
ROTC unit at Penn State
University recalled. "Today we
have 843 students. Things are
different. We have a very suc
cessful program."
Part of that success, according
to Col. Rase, is due to changes in
ROTC itself. In order to meet the
needs of today's total Army;
which includes Active and
Reserve Components, ROTC!
changed to meet the needs of
today's students. As a result,
some Military Science courses
are so popular that many
students who are not enrolled in
Army ROTC still elect to take the
Military Science classes.
"The old image of ROTC as a
bunch of guys in uniform mar
ching across campus is gone.
Which points out another dif
ference. Today, Army ROTC is
open to women. We have 11
female students in our classes
here at Behrend College and they
are all great," Cpt. Schneider
Asst. PMS at Behrend College
added.
While there is still a certain
amount of drill, marksmanship
and military exercise required

for officer training. The program
is augmented with special ad
venture training programs such
as Cross county skiing, orien
teering, rapelling, winter sur
vival training and canoeing.
The fair year program is
divided into two parts: The Basic
Course and the Advanced Coarse.
The Basic Course is normally
taken by students during their
freshman and sophomore years,
according to Cpt. Witherel, Asst.
PMS at Bebrend College . "It's
. sort of a testing period for the
students and for Army ROTC.
The student gets a taste of Army
Life; a way of finding out
• beforehand if he or she really
feels that ROTC is the place to be.
It gives us a chance to evaluate
the interest and ability of the
student to find out if he or she has
what it takes to make it in Army
ROTC and continue on in the
Advanced Course."
There is no military obligation
during the Basic Course and a
student may ' withdraw at
anytime up to the end of the
second year..
In order to 'enroll in the
Advanced Course, a student must
successfully complete the Basic
Course, have demonstrated of
ficer potential, and be able to
meet the Army's physical
requirements. Each student in

the Advanced Course receives up
to a $l,OOO per year in living
allowance.
"It is at this level that a student
incurs a military obligation,"
Cpt. Schneider explained,
"However, this can be fulfilled in
several different ways. Depen-.
ding on the needs of the Army at
the time, the student, upon
graduation and commissioning,
may compete for Active Duty or
elect to serve in either the Army
Reserve or National Guard."
Another reason for the growth
of Army ROTC at Penn State is
the excellent leadership and
management training available,
according to Col. Rose. "This
kind of training is invaluable
when the students are looking for
jobs. Many employers recognize
Army ROTC as a sound
background for potential
executives."
