Among the - Players who have been lost to State College are Bill Stara (last year's co-captain), Paul Heasley (last year's other co-captain), Gary Wolfe, and Bill Breedlove. Despite these heavy losses, several of the incoming freshman players are described as "impressive." Coach Herb Lauffer expresses a "cautious optimism" regarding chances to win another championship. When asked about Behrend's rivalry with Mercyhurst, two Behrend players described it as "intense" and "almost bloody." Coach Lauffer, who was named co-coach of the year last year with Mercyhurst's coach, ex pressed that rivalry in more subdued tones, and gave three basic reasons for its existence. One is that Mercyhurst and New Cheerleaders And More To Come This year pre-tryouts for the 1979430 Soccer and basketball cheerleading squads were held on September sth, 6th and Bth. Approximately 15 girls tried out. Each learned 2 cheers, 2 sidelines and a dance routine. The cheers were taught by last year's veterans Cindy Baus, Kim DiNicola, Jeni Abel and Coreen Connelly. Tryouts were held Monday, September 10. The girls were judged on the cheers they had learned, an original cheer and the answer to a question. The official judges were: Mr. Robert Finley, Outing Club News By Bill Hegman The Behrend Outing Club has many activities planned for the coming school year. Some of the activities include backpacking, canoeing, climbing, cross country. skiing, downhill skiing, and sky diving. As of now the Outing Club has approximately. 25 members and welcomes . any new members. If you - are' interested in joining please,„ contact Bill Hegman at 899-8063, Dr. Masteller in 108 Nick, Eva Smith in 206 Perry, or RTS. . . • : Behrend are close geographically. The next reason is that last year Mercyhurst played us for the District Champs; in fact Mercyhtirst never scored on the Cubs until the Playoffs. The last reason is that several players from both teams grew up together and in many instances played soccer together in high school or other leagues. Seen in this light, Lauffer described the rivalry as "friendly . . . trying to establish who's king of the block." Lauffer went on to say that naturally the team does not want to set its sights on Mercyhurst and no one else. He expressed concern about two other teams - Indiana University and Roberts Wesleyan. Coach Lauffer described both of these teams as "teams to beat in the league." Towards the end of our in terview, Lauffer singled out two points that he wanted to see get into print. The first point is that the team appreciates the support Dr. Stephen Greiert, Dr. John Gamble, Coach Jim Sims, Coach Herb La uf f er, Capt. Jeff Witherel, Coach Ellen Johns, Mrs. Edna Babcock, Mrs. Pat Melzer, Mrs. Sandy Edwards, Ms. Linda Schweinitz, Ms. Ramena Stoew. Eight lucky girls were chosen for the soccer team with basketball cheerleaders to be chosen in October. Congratulations Mary Miseea, Laurie Herrin, Jeni Abel, Cynthia Baux, Karen Kramer, Sandy Pate, Jacquie Sonoski, Debbie Kuhn, and alternative Lenetta John O'Rouke. The second point is an exciting up coming Behrend-Gannon game. On September 26 at 7:30 p.m., the Youth Soccer Program. is sponsoring this soccer match to be held at the Erie Stadium. It will be the first soccer game ever to be held in the newly renovated stadium, and the target crowd, drawn from Behrend, Gannon, and Erie soccer fans, is five thousand people. Tickets for this event sell at 50 cents for students and $l.OO for adults ($1.50 at the door), and can be purchased at Erie Hall or from any soccer player. The team is naturally very excited about this, and are anticipating a large cheering section. Behrend's first soccer match is Saturday, September 15, at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York. Joe Holman Richards. This year's advisor, Mrs. Ramona Stowe had this to say, "We had an excellent choice of girls and it was hard to make a decision. There was so much talent and everyone was so good. I hope no one gets discouraged if they didn't make it and tries out later on." The first soccer game is next Saturday, September 15 when Behrend takes on Roberts Wesleyan (on foreign ground), so come out, support the team and check out your new cheerleaders! activities 1979-80 Men's Varsity Soccer Schedule Coach - Herbert Lauffer Sept. 15 Roberts Wesleyan.
