Hthrtnii Collegian Volume XXXI No. 10 Need Your Help Exceptional Children by Sheri Reim Collegian Staff writer It is YOU we need! If you are interested in any form of education please read on. A Council for Exceptional Children is beginning at Behrend. This is a group of concerned students and professionals that inform and motivate new ideas of education in the community. There are many of these groups nation wide. All are actively involved and are participating in a great variety of activities. As a What Is The J.R.C.? by Linda Schweinitz J.R.C. Secretary Almost everyone knows that S.G.A. stands for Student Government Association and S.U.B. for Student Board, but how many know about J.R.C.? This organization is the Joint Residence Council and represents all resident students. The members are made up from the floor governments elected in each residence hall during fall term. Each floor president is a member of Hall Council. The president, secretary, and treasurer from each Hall council automatically compose the J.R.C. The organization’s advisor is Lynn Mauer, area coordinator for Niagara Hall. The J.R.C. meets each Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Lynn’s apartment. These meetings are open to the public. During this school year the J.R.C. has accomplished several relevant things we would like to bring to your attention. We began the school year with a $4OO debt from last year. Through the successful operation and your support the Niagara Gameroom we managed to repay our debt. After the peanut butter and jelly rally organized by several concerned students, two ad ministrators from University Park came to speak with the members of J.R.C. Together with Mrs. Taylor, Director Kochel, Dean Lane, and a compiled report of the students’ gripes; the GOOD MEMORIES By David O. Stelling The times we've shared have been good memories, But memories fade, like, the leaves on the trees. The leaves will fade, and fall to the earth for new birth. Our friendship has faded because you are gone, But I know it won't die, for we built it too strong — We built it on faith, and respect and on trust — We built it with time, We built it with ‘us’! I know you 've made new friends, but don't forget me. I’m still thinking of you—a good memory! If you find that your new friends, in time, let you down; Just call on your old friend; I’ll still be around. (This poem is dedicated to the Behrend College student body from Lambda Sigma Society members.) Published by the Students of the Behrend College of the Pennsylvania State University member of CEC, you will affect the lives of exceptional children. Through the activities of these units, you serve children by helping to introduce better educational programs. We need 15 people to start our own E.C.E.C. chapter. As a member, you will receive three magazines subscriptions absolutely free, any information requested to complete a term paper or project, and more. If you are interested, please contact Sheri Reim at 899-9075. J.R.C. traded suggestions to improve some of the Food and Housing procedures. Items in our favor are the hot chocolate served at every meal during winter term, more sanitary servings of salads, larger variety of salad dressings, warmer foods, and the return of the respon sibility for Food and Housing to pick up the garbage in the residence halls. The most im portant outcome of the meeting was the students’ gripes brought to the attention of the ad ministration. Recently, when more than 50 members of the Residence Life staff were layed off, the J.R.C. intervened. In a meeting with Dr. Fox and Bob Pacella, the members expressed their con cern for the safety of the students with the absence of the Night Assistants. One week later, as a direct result of that meeting, the Night Assistants were rehired. The J.R.C. also offered their opinion of the closing of the Niagara Gameroom. Dr. Fox negotiated with Mrs. Taylor and established the 24 hour study room and snack- room sales between 11 and 1. All in all the J.R.C. has had a very productive year and we hope that next year will be even better. In attempting to make this year a successful one, the J.R.C. has had the help of many concerned students, to whom we would like to express our deepest gratitude. Thanks! It’s been a great year—from the J.R.C.
