November 10.1977 Socoer Team Playoff Off the strength of their 8-5-2 record this season, the Behrend Soccer Team has earned a spot in the NAIA playoffs. Coach Herb Lauffer’s crew are in Frostburg, Md., preparing for today’s 1 p.m. encounter with Frostburg St. Frostburg St., 7-4-3 on the season, defeated Behrend back in' the opening game of the year 3-1, but Coach Lauffer and Ms team are hopeful that the results will be reversed this time around. For openers, the club is completely healthy now, wMch was not the case in the first meeting between the two teams, when several Behrend players sat out the game with injuries. Also, the club has played together for the entire season and now know how to work together as a unit. Behrend slumped a bit at the end of the season, losing two of their final three games, but over all the team has continued to play excellent defense, shutting out three of their final five op ponents. Here is a capsule review of the team’s games in the last two weeks of the season: The Cubs shut out Allegheny at home on October 18, 1-0. Paul Heasley provided the only score of the contest with a goal in the v^' Rigatoni and Meatballs Salad *1.99 Lasagne Salad *2.75 C3#*Ctj first half as Mike Oliu assisted. Behrend goalies Bill Stara and Bill Dodd combined l2 shots. Behrend then shut out their second consecutive opponent, Youngstown St., 2-0. Paul Heasley and Walt Goshalf scored the goals with Mike Oliu picking up two assists. The Cubs outshot Youngstown St. by a whopping 52- 6 margin Behrend’s final home game of the season ended on a sour note when they were defeated by Grove City 4-1 on October 26. The score was tied l-l at the end of the first period, but Grove City pulled away with three second half goals, two of them after Behrend lost two players to fouls, to win the game. Gary Zemanski ac counted for Behrend’s only score with Ken Renko assisting. Tough defense was the name of the game as Behrend and Houghton College battled to a 0-0 tie on October 29. Houghton outshot the Cubs 23-19, but Behrend goalies combined on 19 saves. In their final game of the regular season, Behrend met defeat at the hands of Fredonia St. by a 4-2 margin. Any order can be prepared to go. Behrend Collegian Bound Zemanski picking up an assist. The Cubs were outshot by Fredonia 19-8. The club rolled up some pretty impressive stats this season both as a team and individually. They outscored opponents by a 25-23 margin, but 13 of the goals against them came on losses to Fredonia St., Grove City, and Slippery Rock. The club posted six shutouts this year, equalling last year's total and maintaining their reputation as a strong defensive soccer team. On the individual side, Paul Heasley proved to be a valuable new addition to this year’s club as he accounted for nearly half of the team’s total goals with 12. Mike Oliu was second in scoring with 6 goals, Gary Zemanski contributed 3, and Ken Renko, Walt Gotshalk, Pete Oetinger, and Tony Orlando added 1 apiece. Ken Renko and Mike Oliu tied for the club lead in assists with 5 each while Tony Orlando, Paul Heasley, and Walt Gotshalk each chipped in with 2, and Gary Zemanski and Chris Goddard 1 each. We wish the team well in the playoffs. Food Drive Thursday evening, November 10, a group of Behrend students will be knocking on doors throughout the community, collecting food for the needy. This is a Thanksgiving project combining the efforts of Gannon, Behrend, Villa Maria, and Mercyhurst students. All students are welcome to par ticipate. More cars are needed.
