May 5, 1977 Selco’s Party is a must see Roberta Schultz Collegian Staff Writer The Birthday Party - A Triumph For the theatre goer who is weary of the usual artificial fantasies offered for two hours to a passive audience, a dose of some excellent drama would certainly remedy the situation. Where can one find drama at such a level in this area? The answer is right here at Behrend College. “The Birthday Party” is a challenge and it is not for the spoon-fed types. It seems difficult for one not to be affected by the performance. The audience is in active pursuit of filling in the hollow spaces left to perplex one’s imagination. Arno Selco directs his most experimental theatrical attempt at Behrend and prospers in his bid to transform writer Harry Pinter’s Broadway triumph into a local success. Timothy Baum was absolutely convinceable as Stanley,' the brooding, mind-wrought hero who falls victim to his fears. His portrayal required utmost concentration as his visage often became the focal point for the audience. Michael Dißaimo’s portrayal of the crafty character Goldberg proved a test of the tongue twisters, albeit a few minor opening night stumbles. His insecure Irish follower, McCann, played by Gregory Johnson, surmounted the tongue-twisting barriers and was always on target with lightening quickness, £ Mekkrt Son Tty Cleamf & 'Zomd Wm *Rudd 4449 Buffalo Road _ , __ Erie, Pa.' Pamela Pile, playing an abused, teasing woman, lived up to her name, Lulu, at the birthday party. Another name, although not actually in the script, was lived up to when Dierdre McCauley’s delightful characterization of Meg paralleled Edith Bunker’s antics. Dierdre provided the show’s light touch as the whimsical, short-sighted wife of Petey, played by Dennis O’NeiEe, who contrasted well as the complaisant, tolerant deck chair attendant at an English resent. Arno Selco displayed his capacity as a fine director by his accommodation of the production to a small area, where hardly a blunder could slip out without escaping, a hawk’s eye. For those who are tired of eye strain and enjoy penetrating drama, this is a must see! The show will con tinue its performances May 4-7. Office hours are forgotten, papers are sloppily read, and, much more reprehensible to me, students and class time are looked upon as distracting or boring. One can’t blame (only) the faculty for this too-prevalent attitude, however, because an impressive record of publication is the only route to job security. And a little committee work never hurts, either. Certainly, lip-service is paid to good teaching, but this is a far less tangible asset. A faculty that looks good on paper is part of the drive to entice students to earn their degrees here. So far, there are only about 75 students here beyond their sixth term. With the addition of a Business major next year (hot at every school), that figure may climb. Those most involved in this effort have been brought here specifically for that purpose. If one day the Penn State higher ups decide to call this whole experiment quits, the Behrend Dean of Faculty, the Academic Division Heads, and others would not be kept around to ad ministrate a two-year branch campus. In essence, the ad ministration is making the faculty squirm partly because their own jobs are not as secure as they might appear. Frankly, I believe the ad minstration might eventually succeed, and I will be glad for future Behrendites if this becomes a less transitory place. But as anyone who’s had Econ. 4 knows, the costs must be weighed with the benefits. Then faculty members who are presently teaching will not be back in the fall. A few are resigning; most were fired. Several do not know where, if anywhere, they will be working next year. Besides the personal upheaval visited upon some of these individuals, this situation affects the quality of the whole environment here. For the sake of attaining some golden number of Behrend graduates, the overwhelming majority of students who spend only a year or two here are subjected to the apathy and poor morale which the administration believes to be acceptable side effects of their task. For the sake of an elusive future, the present around here counts for very little. T/ie G Behitnd Arno Selco Scenic Design by Jacqueline S. The rest of the spectators continued to be pleased by the performance, for T. Daniel is a mime whose movements are fluid and cap tivating. The show, “A World of Mime,” was presented in Erie Hall on Saturday night, as the culmination of the work T. Daniel had done as Behrend’s first artist in residence. He arrived on Thursday, with his wife and “team mate” Laurie, and held workshops in the art of mime all con. page 4 col. 4 Intramural Victory Behrend College swept the Penn State Intramural Regionals recently. Facing competitors from the Beaver, Dußois and Shenango campuses were Ray Green and Andy Epstein in ping pong, Craig Schneider and Randal McFarland in chess, and Joe Grandalski in billiards. Ray and Andy won in both the singles and the doubles table tennis contests. A trophy was accepted for Behrend College by Dr. Michael Small for the campus accumulating the most points at the contest held at the Shenango campus.
