Clyde .Kennedy t textb Qr,olvitgi Thursday Volume XXIV No. 18 Published by the students of the Elehrend College, Pennsylvania State University Student govt news By Dan McKay Editor-in-Chief Last Monday night's SGA meeting, in the absence of Treasurer Joann Bruno and Secretary Michelle Harding, opened with a safety Committee report by Bill Dale. He reported that the fire alarm in Perry Hall will be replaced with a louder, continuous ring alarm. The need for this louder alarm was demonstrated by some students who slept through past fire drills. The area coordinators, he said, !lave not been holding the drills on their scheduled monthly basis. The training sessions for Resident Assistants in the use of fire ex tinguishers was hailed as a success. The sessions, provided by the Brookside Fire Depart ment, will be continued next fall. The present procedure for dealing with bomb threats, used in the threat of March 31, was successful, but will be Bomb threat At 6:45 p.m. last Wednesday, Security received an anonymous bomb threat. The caller, who was never identified, said a bomb, placed somewhere in Lawrence Hall, would go off within an hour. An security personnel and Lawrence Resident Assistants were notified immediately and at 6:40 p.m., Lawrence residents were evacuated from the building, much to the dismay of dormers who were caught in the showers when the fire alarm went Financial aid (UNIVERSITY PARK) Scholarship recipients at Penn State will man the telephones next week to help fellow students in need of financial assistance for their college education. During an eight-night period, groups of 15 to 20 students will man a battery of telephones and will contact alumni throughout the State asking them to con tribute to the University's major scholarship programs. "We're initiating this program here," said- Charles Lupton, executive director of the T. Not enough people are getting in volved. A lot of people sit around and bitch about the way things are at Behrend; we have had enough bitching. Now it's time to -do something about it. I plan to make Behrend more socially active. "I don't think Behrend has enough to offer its commuters besides academic opportunity. The Student Affairs Committee report showed that at their _ meeting last Thursday, it was decided that the Collegian will receive financial advice from Paul Bates. Mr. Bates is an Instructor in Finance who has had experience with the Daily Collegian at University Park. Scott Little reported that the Student Affairs Committee resolved to set up a workshop by Larry Skerlong, Assistant to the Dean of Student Affairs, for all faculty members to instruct them on advising. The workshop, to be held next fall, will be coordinated by Dr. Fox, Dean of Faculty. The May 10 Honors and Awards Banquet was brought up. A motion to give free tickets to the 10 most regular attenders of -the SGA meetings was passed. Nominations for the Guy W. Wilson award, it was decided, will be taken at one of next week's off. Responding to the call were the Wesleyville and Brookside fire departments, and the state police. After waiting - out the initial time the caller had given for the bomb to go off, Chief Johnston and the Behrend Security searched all public areas, such as the basement, phone booths, and the lobby. "My main concern is to provide activities to stimulate in volvement 'in both social and extracurricular areas. Instead of blaming student apathy, I'd like to increase awareness that a governmental body exists on campus for the betterment of both resident and commuting students. The interdisciplinary course on Gorge Awareness is scheduled for April 24 and 25. The boating safety course needs 20 people together before it can be taught. The Free University will tem porarily be set up as a sub committee of SGA. Its status is expected to change next year. The location and times for the SGA Executive Board elections was decided. A table will be set up for 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the RUB next Wednesday, Thursday, .and Friday. Another one will be placed in Dobbins Hall next Wednesday and Thursday from 4 :30 to 6 :30 in the afternoon. The meeting was adjourned at 8:49 p.m. . Everybody's on their way to University Park, and nobody wants to commit themselves. I'm a perfect example myself; I've been going here three years now, and this is the first time I'm getting involved. That's mostly because I now have the time. "Another problem is funding of the SGA.
