The visitors chose to control the ball and held on to the lead, thus setting the stage for the thrilling finish. Chip Murphey, on -a driving layup, brought Behrend to within one point, 76-75, but was called for an offensive foul in the process. Tom Thiel (that's- right, Tom Thiel) converted one of the free throws to put the Tomcats on top by two points. A missed Cub shot, followed by a Quinlan layup, put Thiel up by four, 79-75. Behrend's Jim Davis quickly made it 79-77 with twenty. seconds remaining. The persistent Behrend defense then forced Tom Thiel into an offensive foul with sixteen seconds left, giving Behrend the ball and a chance to tie the game. Davis missed on a 15-footer to give Thiel the ball. Chesko then fouled Quinlan with two seconds remaining. Mark Chesko led the Cubs with 21 points and Jon Kennedy hauled in 11 rebounds, while John Quinlan paced the Tomcats with 25 points. Three days later, Allegheny College invaded Erie Hall, and due to a second half spurt and some hot shooting by the Gators' Marty Orzechowski, left Behrend with another frustrating loss, this one by a 72-67 score. • Behrend started out strong behind the shooting of Jim Davis. Davis had thirteen first half points and Jon Kennedy added ten more before intermission. Along with the scoring of Davis and Kennedy, Behrend once again showed their opponents a hounding man-to-man defense, and once again took a half time lead, 42-38. In the second half Allegheny jumped into the lead with three quick buckets. Behrend retained their composure and played an effective zone defense, not allowing Allegheny to penetrate the free throw lane. Never theless, Behrend couldn't regain the lead, despite the efforts of Pat Gahr, who had nine second half points, including four for four from the foul line. The closest the Cubs came to victory was a Jim Davis desperation shot with sixteen seconds remaining and Behrend trailing 69-67. Three Allegheny foul shots in the closing seconds made it 72-67, and another tough loss for the Cubs, whose record was lowered to 1-3. The Cubs' scoring was evenly distributed between Jim Davis (16 points), Pat Gahr (13), Jon Kennedy (12), and Eddie Evans (10). Marty Orzechowski poured in 23 points for the winners, in cluding 14 in the second half, and Bill Faloon chipped in with 16. Chip Murphey led the Cubs with 12 points. And just before the press deadline, word has reached Behrend that the Cubs fell prey to a powerful Edinboro team by a 91-66 count, leaving the Cubs with a record of 1-5. Coach Ed Onorato believes that his wrestlers have what it takes to win, "if injuries don't force us to default in any classes we will be putting a real tough group on the mats. It will require a lot of hard work on the part of each boy, but in any event the fans will be sure to see exciting wrestling—losts of action—at our matches." The next match will be shortly after we return to school when the Cubs travel to Youngstown State January 6. Student support of the team will be sure to give them a boost, so be sure to come and catch the action in Erie Hall tonight. 4 0 9 /.z4;,ek,„, 6A, ;X-treeei(7A, 4500 East Lake road Erie, Pennsylvania 16511 (814)899-9253 Jewelry China, Crystal, Music Boxes, Hanging Plants, A nriwood Carvings Page Ohre
