I don't know how man) of you have read any national accounts of the Orange I3'ow•I, but I have detected a somewhat derogatory note towards State's illustrious victory. Actually, I got downright disgusted when I read John Underwood's article in Sports Illustrated. It is said that the only people who believe that Penn State is as good as Ohio State. CSC, Notre Dame etc . are people from Pennsylvania. Let it go down in the record book that I have been officially inspired and duly motivated to write the following letter to Sports Illustrated (whether or not they print it is another matter) : Sirs: - - As a student of the Penn State University, I would like to ex press my most sincere apologies to all non-Pennsylvania sports writers, coaches, fans and especially to the LSU Tigers for our deplorable and inexcusable actions in the Orange Bowl. We all read with religious fervor the Rt. Reverend John Underwood's account of the game, the WHOLE paragraph, not to mention many other informative articles in various publications. I guess Joe and his players didn't read them. Not only did the Lions have the unmitigated gall to win the Orange Bowl; but to make matters worse, they've taken the unyielding position that 12-0 is a good record. They certainly can't expect a high rating with that kind of iconoclastic belief. I'll try and talk to Joe and see if we can't manage to lose a few next year. If we work at it. Hopes arc high for continuing the team's record of -three con secutive winning seasons. Last year. the Behrend girls captured the Greater Erie Women's Basketball League title for the third - year in a row, and with it, permanent possession of the tournament trophy. The league is comprised of teams from Behrend, Mercyhurst and Villa Maria College. Coach Ms. Melody Laudemack is quite optimistic that the girls can repeat their success and run the team's record to four winning seasons. The nexi game, scheduled for January 17 pits Behrend against Edinboro State at Edinboro. Cagers Need Snow Tires To Gain Some Traction The roads are slippery here at Behrend and the Behrend basketball team still needs a pair of snou tires. Wrestlers Master Mats-Maul Malone Wrestling has come to Behrend College as the Cubs became 5 and 2 on the season by gaining a 33-12 victory over Malone in their first home game this year. According to coach Onorato, Behrend not only put one in the win column a week ago Wednesday, but also climbed one rung higher on the ladder of respectability. The Cubs are fast gaining the respect of opposing teams, coaches and most important to the team, the respe l / 4 and admiration of the Behrend College fans. Alir Carter (118), Greg Woz niak (126), Larry Fabrizi (134) and Brian Vollant (167) all pinned their opponents with Fabrizi putting away Malone's Donis Alpeter in a mere 33 seconds. .fr The most exciting parts of the meet were three decisions won by Behrend grapplers. The first, which occurred in the 142 lb. division saw Mike Mussiarone hang on in the final minutes to gain a 6-5 decision over Malone's Dave }Lykes. The most exciting match took place in the 150 lb. class that pitted Behrend's Ashley Swift agarnst a tough Guy Ilull from Malone. Behrend fans saw a match that included five four. point takedowns with Swift putting on the winning move with only 16 seconds remaining on the clock. Wild and wooly contests are indicative of Swift's demeanor according to Onorato who describes Swift as - very active and spirited." At one point in the contest, with Hull winning 4-0 and Swift on top in control, Hull reversed Swift only to have the Cub grap pler escape and put Hull on his back. Hull again put Swift on his back on the boundry line. Considering, that this all hap pened in about 12 seconds, the ref called time and conducted about a two-minute conference with both coaches and the scorer to In the second game of Behrend's wrestling-basketball double header, the cagers fell to Wheeling in a highly contested game that was closer than the score might indicate. The Cubs held the lead 14-9 with 13:2g left in the half. Wheeling popped in 9 quick points to make the score 18- 14 with 11:11 remaining in . the first half. Behrend tried to close the gap before going to the locker room but they couldn't get a grip on the ball committing numerous turnovers. At the half, the Cubs were down 42-30. The Cubs came out of the locker room ready to play ball, closing the Wheeling lead to 48-40 with 16:20 left in the game. Then A heeling, aided by many more Behrend turnovers, ran the score to 74-46 gaining an in surmountable lead. Larry McAleer lead Behrend with 18 points followed by Jack Nill with 14 points. The Cubs toughened up for Waynesburg and, even though they lost, Behrend got five players in double figures. Jeff Gillette was high for the Cubs with 20 points followed by Larry Szorek with 15, Larry McAleer with 12 and Jack Nill and Jim Davis both checked in with 10 points. This Saturday the cagers battle Walsh in Erie Hall at 8 p.m. Perhaps we could get some fans out to the game to shovel a little snow and give the Cubs a push. After the dust cleared, Swift was behind 10-5 although later viewing of the meet videotapes revealed the score should actually have been 9-4. This would make the final outcome of the contest Swift 17 Hull 15, instead of Swift 18 Hull 16 as the scoreboard showed it. Coach Onorato feels that neither wrestler gained an advantage with the rest and the fans were treated to a hard fought contest right down to the last seconds. One concept that usually holds true in wrestling is that superior position will offset strength and the Cubs Kevin Yendell proved it '74 Matmen: left to right bottom - A. Volkman, K. Richardson, G.
