Every year at this time "pennant fever" has set in. Sometimes the races are already decided by runaway winners and other races must go down to the last , day. This year it is possible that every Major League division could go down to the wire; but it is highly improbable. The American league leaders, Baltimore and Oakland are already in a magic • number countdown. The Orioles number is six, since they are seven games in first place with only thirteen games left. The Athletics are almost as similar as they are seven games in the lead with fourteen games left. Any com bination of a win for the leaders - or a loss for the second place club will reduce the magic number. The National League races are somewhat different however. In the western Division it is still primarily a three team race with the Cincinnati Reds five games in front of the Los Angeles Dodgers and eight games in front of San Francisco. It is seemingly probable that the Reds will clinch it, but don't count the other teams out yet. The Eastern Division of the National League is the closest race of all. There is a total of five teams that are still in the running. Pittsburgh is currently holding the top spot with a slim one game lead over the surprising Montreal Expos. The thing that is so sur prising about them is since they are an expansion team they have never placed higher than fifth in the five years they have been in existence. St. Louis is in third place, two and a half games back. New York is in fourth and Chicago is in fifth place. These teams are three and a half and five and a half games behind respectively. After all the smoke clears, who is going to end up on top in the East? If I had to play fortune teller, I would have to go along 'Super Bowl' to be at Behrend When the weather starts to get cold and the leaves start falling down, warm clothes are being put on and footballs begin to fill the air. The reason for this is because it is fall and with the fall season comes the time for hot chocolate and football widows. They have one of the most explosive teams in the league led by all-star Willie Stargell who currently is leading the league in Runs Batted In with 112, and a close second in Home Runs with 40. Also their pitching staff finally seems to.be coming around from their "sore shoulder blues." They have had good performances lately from Bob Moose, Nelson Briles, and Bruce Kison who has just been brought up from Charleston. But what about the other teams? Montreal has never had a winning season. but this year things, look different. The reason I donft think they can hold on enough to win is because they have too many youngsters playing for them and no one is sure how they will react to the pressure. Although these young players have consistently done well for the Expos, they just don't have enough to carry them all the way. St. Louis, New York and Chicago are all swimming in a whirlpool. Each one is trying desperately to hang in there but they all blew their chances when they had them. All three of these teams have been hot and cold all year long and now they are just knocking themselves out of contention by playing each other. But then again you must sit back and think a minute. This is professional baseball and anything can and does happen. so many times in the history of the game a team has its division seemingly wrapped up and before you know it they are on the out side looking in. For instance, in 1964 the Philadelphia Phillies had an eight game lead with twelve games to go. They went on to lose the next ten in a row and the pennant. but will this happen this year, who knows it just might. Sunday afternoons and Monday nights. But what about during the week when these teams are practicing and preparing themselves for the following weekend? There are still football games going on. They may not get as much at tention as the major college games or the pro games, but to the people involved it is just as serious to win every one of their games as it is for a major college to become National Champions. What am I talking about? Behrend College's own answer to a football season, Intramural Flag Football. This year there is a total of twelve teams com peting. There will be two leagues designed with six teams in the league. One is a dorm league, the other is a commuter league. Playing wing and possessing incredulous speed, "Jay Bird" will have a chance to lengthen his lead on the career assists list which he now heads up with 12. Also returning this year will be Roger Nolan who last year was selected Behrend College Athlete of the Year.
