Page Four Behrend Cubs Highlight Homecoming With a Moving Victory Over Gannon For an entire week the cheer of “Beat Gannon” was thundered across the Behrend athletic fields. This was not a cry from over-enthusiastic high school boys, but rather one of mature confidence in mental preparation for the all important soccer match with Gannon College. The booters from Behrend lived up to their expectations, last Saturday, by defeating the highly touted Gannon Knights 4-3 in overtime. Gannon, for years, has dominated the sports scene in the Erie area, while Behrend, on the other hand, has always been forced to take a back seat, not only to Gannon, but also to Edinboro and Mercyhurst. The stage was set. Behrend vs. Gannon for the first time ever in athletic competition. After ten minutes of play, Gannon jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a score from about ten yards out. But the gutty lads from Gannon fought back to tie the game. With a minute remaining in the overtime period, John Hoge scored during a mad scramble in front of the Gannon net to put Behrend ahead 4-3. This was “Hogey’s” second goal of the afternoon. Behrend’s goalie, Sparky Shaefer, squelched all possible hopes for Gannon as he grabbed a poor penalty kick with just thirty seconds left to give Behrend a 4-3 triumph. The excited crowd of ap proximately 250 people, who endured the freezing rains all afternoon, went home with smiles on their faces. Football Fever Strikes As the leaves gently turn colors and the wind begins to chill, every true sports fan suffers from an acute case of football fever. The Behrend Campus is not immune. Intramural flag-football teams have been formed and are in operation to combat this common disease. The teams are com prised of students from Perry, Niagara and Lawrence Halls plus a commuter team and a faculty team. As of October 10, the “Texas Taters” (3-0) is sharing first place with the “Faculty AC” (3- u). Third place is held down by the “TRC” (2-1) and in fourth place is the “Rookies” (2-2).
