Linksters Deserve Better Rating Than Record Shows by Tim Everett Sports Reporter “The team deserves a better fate than a four and three record.” That is what coach Robert Monahan had to say about his golf team’s season so far this year. He went on to say that the team was in some close matches but just couldn’t pull them out. The team lost two tight contests to Lakeland Community College, a very tough competitor. They also lost to Cayahoga Community College Metro from Cleveland. They did win matches from Ashtabula-Kent State, Erie County Community College, and Shenango Valley Campus of PSU. They also placed a decent fifth out of eleven teams competing in the NJCAA Region XIX Tour nament held in New Jersey. Coach Monahan felt that the team could have placed second or at least third because there were only six strokes between second and fifth place. Beaver—3 103 122 2—ll The team has one more match left. They will compete on June 3 in the Pennsylvania State University Commonwealth Campus Golf Tournament. They also competed this past Tuesday in a quadrangular match with McKeesport Campus PSU, Dußois Campus PSU, and Ashtabula-Kent State. The team itself is a highly talented group of individuals. The number one man is Dale Cake who is said to have the longest Behrend Collegian drives in Behrend golf history. In high school, he finished tenth in his state’s high school tour nament. He is said to have the most potential on the team although he is a little bit disap pointed with his play this year. Coach Monahan says however, that he is playing good golf. Number two man is Jeff Mansfield. He had the best score in the New Jersey Tournament. Coach Monahan calls Jeff his “best performer” on the course. Larry Garther is the man on the golf team. He is a steady per former and is an asset to the team. Steven Anlgrem was the number one man last year, but despite his slump this year, he is still a valuable member of the team. He is a bit inconsistent but still can come up with a big one when needed. The fifth man is Joe Netters Serve Defeat To Hapless Ashtabula Behrend’s tennis team ex tended their season record to eight wins to only one defeat by beating Ashtabula-Kent by the score of 6-3 Tuesday. This was the second contest between the two schools this year. Behrend had beaten them previously by the identical score of 6-3 in the first match of the season. For Behrend, singles victories went to McPherson, Shevchik, Lyons and Lopus while both Baker and Higgins lost close three set matches in their singles en deavors. It was the last home match for the netters, but there will be two more important matches this week with Beaver-PSU on Thursday and Altoona on Saturday. Last year Behrend fell to defeat to both of these schools with Altoona beating Behrend 9-0. After Altoona, the team will travel to the Commonwealth Tennis Tournament at University Park, June 3, concluding the season. In Tuesday’s match against Ashtabula, almost the entire team performed in the match in either singles or doubles. Leading 4-2 after singles, Coach Lauffer TERMPAPERS Researched, written and professionally typed. All wriiers have a minimum SS, BA degree. If he can keep the balls from getting stuck up in a tree, he will do all right. Art Smithy and John Satysher are the alternates for the team. Overall, the team might have done better but that is the way the game of golf goes. They do have a good chance of copping this year’s commonwealth campus tourney and their season in glory. We on the sports staff wish the best of luck to the Gold team. The team doesn’t get the glory as other Behrend teams, but they still deserve a lot of credit and support of the entire student body. improvised some new doubles teams to compete in the match giving some experience to some different players on the team. At first doubles McPherson and Shevchik teamed up to win 6-3 against Colson and Fisher. The second doubles team was com prised of the previously un defeated John “Hefty” Long and Jay Kossler, they, however, went down to defeat 6-3,6-2, evening their match record at 1-1. At the third doubles position it was a crucial point for Behrend. Introduced to this spot was Rob Hicks and Bob Baginski who defeated the opponent 6-4, 6-2 in a tough match. They are now the only undefeated doubles team with a remarkable record of 1-0. Rich Byerty is also keeping everybody in close competition for a debut in match play. McPherson (B) def.
