Page Four Behrend Netters Remain Undefea The Behrend Campus tennis team clinched victories four and five this week by beating Lakeland Community College, 6- 3, and Cuyahogo-Metro, 6-1. With these victories in hand the team will travel to Allegheny-South in Pittsburgh searching for their sixth victory and keeping their undefeated season intact. Coach Lauffer is very confident that this years netters should do the same job on them as they did last year. Next Tuesday, Lakeland will be, coming to Behrend, searching for revenge on last Saturday’s loss. The final score of the match was 6-3 in Behrend’s favor, but all Lakeland has to do is win two more points out of nine, and they will be the victors. In looking over the outcome of last Saturday’s match, it looks improbable that Lakeland will go home with a victory. One of the two singles loses for Behrend was at the number two position where Jay Baker went down to defeat against Jim Hise. He lost the first set, 6-3, but came back the second, 6-4; however, his luck turned the third set, 6-2. Jay will be looking for revenge because up until that match, he was un defeated in singles play. The other loss was to A 1 Lopus, the sixth man. Lopus lost by the miserable score of 6-0, 6-1 to Mare Abrams. He feels that this weeks practice and a home court advantage, the scores could be reversed. The victories for Behrend came from Bob McPherson, Jim Lyons, Joe Shevchik and Jim Higgins. Both McPherson and Shevchik remain undefeated in singles play. First and third doubles also continued their undefeated string, while second doubles lost a close three set match. It was the rain that finally ended the home match against Cuyahoga-Metro. From then on it looked all down hill, Sandcock from Cuyahoga beat Lyons 6-4, 6-0, then McPherson after winning his first set, lost his second and started off slow in his third. Baker also lost his first set and so did Joe Shevchik. Behrend could only win by sweeping doubles. However, the wind changed for Behrend as McPherson, Baker and Shevchik all pulled out victories at the last minute. During this time, Higgins and Lopus beat Smith and Jones in Doubles. Behrend came up shining with a 6-1 lead and a victory already secure when it started raining with the first and second doubles teams just getting underway. With no end of the rain in sight, the doubles matches were cancelled, leaving the score 6-1 in favor of Behrend. Behrend 6- Lakeland 3 Bob McPherson (B) def. Bruce Weill 7-5, 6-4 Jim Hise (L) def. Cubs in S Problems “If anybody told me iast year that we would be 3-4 after 7 games this season I would have told them they were crazy - but here we are!” That’s the reaction of Coach Clarence Stoner to the Behrend baseball team’s horrendous start this season. Stoner doesn’t know if the problems are mental or what - but there are problems - lots of them. The biggest problem is probably at shortstop. The three people that have played at that position so far have combined for no less than 11 errors so far - not exactly what you’d call flawless defense! They are all fine players, it’s just unfortunate that the problems have centered at short. The other big problem is the pitching. Last year’s almost unhittable and unbeatable one two punch of Mark Lytle and Tom Wright have proved less effective than they were last year. The relief staff hasn’t been much better. The staff has been serving up the good pitches and enemy hitters are getting good wood on the ball consistently. This is at tested by the fact that in their last bad itchir- and even Behrend Collegain In i n by Tony AIo Asst. Sports Editor lump; Erupt worse defense have given ud a total of 50 runs. The spirit is at an all-time low and the players’ attitude is anything but good. However, Coach Stoner hasn’t even begun to consider the finer points because the team hasn’t even been doing the basic things right - you can’t make good plays if you can’t make the routine ones. First of all Stoner is going to go with a set, starting lineup. It’s the only way to have a confident, efficient team in the field every game. Also, when a player has a starting position sewed up he’ll be able to play with more confidence and be relaxed. It helps when you know that you set on the spot every game and that there isn’t anybody waiting to take your place at the slightest miscue on your part. The starting line up will be Roger Nolan in left, Gary Ohrn in center, Don Raydo in right, Bobby Marks at 3rd, Duane Zimmerman at 2nd, and Ed Kush and Jim Grieshober alternating at catcher and first base. It looks like Pat Malone has the inside track for the big shortstop position - although Gary Ohrn and Bobby Marks also have a shot. Malone has been a consistent fielder for the Cubs so far. His fielding has been atrocious but he needs confidence and he’s not going to get it sitting on the bench. Ed Kush and Duane Zimmerman are second and third in hitting and Orhn and Raydo should come around.
