PSU FOOTBALL Nittany Lions run over by a Crimson Tide CODY BUPP "Roll Tide Roll" was the chant from Bryant Denny Stadium and Alabama did just that last Saturday night as the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide took care of the #l6 Nittany Lions. It was a game that many had circled on the schedule since the two announced last season they would be renewing the series. Penn State fans knew if they hung around with the Tide they may have a shot, or it would be a blow out from the beginning. With yet an other slow start, the Lady Lions were in for a long night. Robert Bolden was put under the microscope Sat urday night with the nation watching to see if he could be the first freshman in NCAA history to knock off the #1 team on the road. Despite throwing two inter ceptions, Robert Bolden showed promise and poise for a Nittany Lion team that is searching for lead ers. Bolden played just about how one would fig ure a true freshman would see Nittany on page 8 NFL Stealers pull out shaky win against Atlanta MIRANDA MCCORMICK Dramatic endings for the Steelers have become com monplace, and last week's win was no exception. With a few minutes left in the game and a tied score of 9-9, Atlanta had the ball on their own 30-yard line, but Troy Polamalu, saved the day. The Steelers failed to get to the endzone, but Jeff Reed came in for the win ning field goal and he missed. When the game vents into overtime, Dixon handed off to Mendenhall, and he took it to the end zone for the winning touchdown. The crowd went wild as the Steelers proved they could win without thier golden boy, Big Ben. It was the Steel ers over the Falcons 15-9 in the season opener. It is not really surprising that these two teams would go to overtime. This was the third time the Steelers and the Falcons needed extra time to decide a game. Jessica Woods had a substantial impact as the team went undefeated. Lady Lions remain champions The Lady Lions were tearing up the Junker Cen ter last weekend as they went undefeated in the sec ond day of their own invita tional, not losing a single game, and captured the title as they defeated Grove City in the championship game. Sophomore Mary Sperry, was named the MVP of the tournament, and her team mate junior Stefanie Kelley was selected to the All- Tournament team as the two combined for 58 kills between the two of them throughout the tourna ment. "Being named to the All- +LIN t\litiq MEN'S SOCCER Continued success in In the peaks of Colorado, the men's soccer team made a weekend trip to Colorado Springs where they contin ued their undefeated season. After playing McMurray, a college based out of Texas, Behrend forced them to a 2-0 shutout. Senior captain Jerry Tortella capitalized early on in the 19th minute to score, as the ball ricocheted off of a McMurray de fender into the back of the net. Sen ior captain Lance Sabol scored off of an assist from Jake Gamble in the 62nd minute to add the last push for the win. Gamble has been looked to score goals vital goals early on in the season, but shows his versatility and ability to assist his teammates. Junior Chris Boela recorded another shutout in his debut season with the Lions. McKinney was named as the AMCC defensive player of the week, after helping to secure two shutouts. "It was tough to get acclimated to the altitude but we subbed to keep guys fresh," said McKinney. "Breath ing in Colorado was definitely a fac tor for our team." Even though the weekend was fo cused on soccer, the boys were able to experience the beauty of Colorado. They toured Pikes Peak and were able to attend a BYU versus Air Force Academy football game. "Being in Colorado was a great chance to bond with the team, see the beautiful Colorado scenery, and hold our own against strong competition," said senior defenseman Zach Herd. The trip was beneficial because the Bottom CROSS COUNTRY The Behrend invitational takes place this weekend for the Lion runners at the Behrend fields Spotts the roster. It is up to seven year veteran head Coach Phil Pisano to maneuver his players to victory, but so far, he seems to be mak ing all the right calls as the lions are 5-3 and peaking right at the heart of their schedule. "The difference this weekend that led to our victory was probably the Mary Sperry Sophomore mix up in the lineup," said Sperry. "We have a pretty deep bench this year with a lot of young kids who can step into any position quickly." The team started their tournament with a tough match-up against number one seeded Carnegie Mel lon. The Lions took the first game easily 25-19, but ran into trouble during the sec ond set falling 25-21 to Carnegie. The third set was the turning point as Behrend won it in extra time by a final score of 30- 28 and was able to close out the match winning the last game 25-19. They were able to increase their record to 3-0-2 after their trip, and came away with a tie against Grove City on Wednesday. Along with continuing their unde feated season, Tortella is four goals away from securing the school's record of most goals. The team will take on Westminster Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. on the Behrend Fields.
