The Behrend men and women added to their first place wins in the 200-yard Med ley Relays. Stefanko, Cook, Lawrence, and MacManus made up the women’s team. Altemose, Strunk, Sullivan, and Andrew Opalewski represented the men. “[Freshmen] Andrew Opalewski and Meghan Ste fanko had a stand out meet,” said Wallace. “They performed at their peak when we needed MEN’S TENNIS Lions notch first victory The men’s tennis team competed this past weekend in their home opener, ending the games with a win against Waynesburg and a loss to Grove City. In the home opening match on Friday, the Lions lost to Grove City, and on the following Saturday they returned to the court to gain their first win of the season against Waynesburg. Head coach Jeff Barger felt it was a solid start to the season, especially after losing three starters from the previous year. “I felt like we played well for the start of the season. Our losses were against two very tough teams,” Barger said. In the match against Grove City, Behrend struggled against the Grove City Wolverines, los ing 8-1. Junior Elliot Blackstone was the stand-out star of the weekend as he continued to improve his record with a 7-6, 6-5 victory in the number one singles spot. He continued to improve his record on Satur day when Behrend played the Waynesburg Yel low Jackets. Blackstone won with a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the singles match and played with freshman Chris Galvin to earn a doubles win with the score of 8-0. Galvin, senior Shane Mosier, sophomore Peter Bissert, senior Brad Nagel and junior Jason Grosch also all found a win in singles, and with the help of senior Kelly Manning and junior John Michalko teaming up in the doubles match, Behrend easily defeated Waynesburg 8-0. With his success thus far in the season, Coach Barger looks for Blackstone as a leader on the court. His early 3-1 record shows that he is look ing to have a great season. His personal goals are to win the AMCC, have a personal best this season, and to break the record for all-time singles wins. “My win at singles against Grove City was the best match of my college career. 1 love tennis for the competition. Tennis is my outlet,” said Elliot Blackstone. Along with Blackstone, Bissert and sophomore Jake Fling are players to watch for, according to Coach Barger. With a spring trip to Hilton Head, the team looks to improve in the area of doubles. “We would like to have a winning record going into our spring trip to Hilton Head,” Barger said. The Behrend divers swept the first place seats in every diving event. “Outside of practice, I visual ize my dives,” said Graves. “I am very pleased with how this season went.” After practicing over 15 hours per week and swimming from 5,000-9,000 yards per day, the team was well prepared for the meet. “The experience was a lot of different things from the lead ership to what to expect com ing into the meet like we were just in,” Wallace said. “And how to pull together and swim fast when you’re tired is what it’s all about.” The team finishes their sea son anticipating strong results at the ECAC and NCAA cham pionships. We need to improve our doubles right now. Our teams are looking a little better, but we need to play to gether a little better. With a lot of matches in the next few weeks, we should pull together,” Behrend will have another home match on Fri day Feb. 26 against Franciscan, new to the AMCC conference. The Lions will play again on Saturday, Feb. 27 at home against the Westmin ster Titans. Later, the Blue and White will be traveling down to Hilton Head, S.C. for their spring trip in which they will be competing in four matches in five days.
