The book is a close look at the complicated relationship between the numerous mem oirs, regimental histories, and other narratives put out by Civil War veterans, and the thou sands of Civil War novels pub lished since 1805. “In order to focus my study, 1 devote attention to seven Civil War novels," Warren said. “In particular I focused on Stephen Cranes The Red Badge of Courage (1895), Margaret Mitchell s Gone with the Wind (1986), Caroline Gordon s None Shall Look Back (19.87). Will liam Faulkner's Absalom, Absa lom! (1986) and The Unvanquished (1988), Michael Shaaras The Killer Angels (1974), and Howard Bahr s The Judas Field (2006) ." Originally, Scars started as his 2004 dissertation. Warren wrote his 2004 doctoral disser tation as a graduate student at the University of Virginia. Over the next two years, he revised about a third of the dis sertation. Dance” Other options for the fair’s name were Jobs for the Rest of Us, and Alternative Careers Fair, but these imply some ex clusion and in the end the name chosen is a simple description of just what it is, no more and no less. The event will focus on gov ernment, non-profit, and cre ative careers, because most students don’t know how to break into these industries. The idea began after this fall’s Career Fair. These are jobs that offer excellent opportuni ties for majors in the School of Humanities and Social Sci ences and also offer a lot of po sitions for business and Associate Professor of Political Science ANDREW TARR H&SS writer • political science major Robert Speel, an associate professor of political science, has received Penn State Uni versity's Undergraduate Pro gram Leadership Award for 2010. President Spanier will pres ent Speel the award at the Fac ulty/Staff Awards Recognition on April 12 at the Nittany Lion Inn in State College. The Undergraduate Program Leadership Award is a univer sity-wide award and is meant to recognize a faculty member who has demonstrated exem plary leadership benefiting an existing Penn State undergrad uate degree program. The goal of the award is to recognize those individuals who have major responsibilities for the delivery of undergradu ate education within a unit and who are providing leadership that has transformed or revital- examining civil war of Washington D.C., provided Warren with much of the rea son why he has always had a fascination with American his tory, and more specifically the Civil War. His inspiration for writing on this subject is simple. “That subject led to an inter est in soldiers' writings more generally. Once I saw how vet erans' memoirs had influenced fictions about the war, I had the idea for the book.” Writing about the Civil War has always been a particular favorite of Warren’s. He of fered up some explaination as hy he, along with so others, decided to do “It is clear that we te about the Civil War a way to understand ir own moment in time, ipecially with regard to le social and political issues of today: race, gender, reglion, human rights, the nature of lib erty, and the role of the federal government in our everyday lives.” Warren is the Editor of ibrose Bierce Project, an online forum that is .ed to the study of Am brose Bierce. Bierce is consid ered to be a master of the short story genre and a very impor tant satirist. Warren has also been fea tured in the introduction to the engineering majors.” The idea turned into action when the ACPC organized a planning committee to make this happen. It consists of a col laboration be tween the ACPC, H&SS, Communica tions and English, the Erie VA, and student repre sentatives from the School of Robert Speel the GNPC careers.” He mentioned that it does not exclude business or engineer ing students. “That’s what’s nice about government. It can apply to ized the undergraduate pro gram within the unit in some way. “The award is a recognition of growth in the political sci ence program at Penn State over the past decade,” Speel said. Speel started the monthly po litical science newsletter that highlights news on upcoming courses, course deadlines, pub lic speaker events coming to Behrend, upcoming career fair events, faculty and student news, and news from student groups. All political science students receive the monthly newsletter. The newsletter keeps students up do date on politics. “We have more majors, a large group of interested alumni and the new advisory board made up of prominent community members,” Speel said. Speel is in charge of the stu dent field trip to Washington book, The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce. Along with editing and writ ing for this project, Warren de signs and oversees the humanities computing project and is the editor for the elec tronic journal. Warren has also written mul tiple articles on a variety of top ics, including “Presidential Wounds: The JFK Assassina tion and the White Male Body,” which was featured in a 2008 issue of Men & Masculinities, and “It Reads Like a Novel: The 9/11 Commission Report and the American Reading Public,”t from the Journal of American Studies. pretty much all the majors here at Behrend,” said Watters. “There are lots of openings in these fields for many majors, including psychology, commu nication, history, English, biol ogy, chemistry, computer science, accounting, econom ics, marketing, electrical engi neering, and mechanical engineering,” Speel said. Carol Capan, the employer relations coordinator with ACPC, said there are “a few, but not many, and not around here.” relevant or ganizations. When asked why this career fair is differ ent, Andrew Watters, an associate di rector of ACPC said, “It’s specifi cally targeting employer’s in Depending on the success of the event, future Behrend stu dents might also enjoy this unique opportunity. The quantity and quality of employers depends on the quantity and quality of students attending. “Employers like events with lots of students and good can didates,” Capan said. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April Bth in McGar vey Commons and will go from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Details can be found at the AC PC web site at www.behrend.psu.edu/acpc. D.C. every other year. Students that go on this trip see a variety of unique features that most do not get to see, like a private tour of the Pentagon. They also meet with alumni from the Behrend political science pro gram that are currently work ing in the D.C. area. Speel also started the North American Politics class in Toronto. The class analyzes re lations United States - Cana dian history. The class will take place in May, following the end of the spring semester. Speel has also recently re ceived the 2008/09 Council of Fellows Excellence in Outreach Award and the 2006 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching.
