The drama, now in its second day, con tinues to unfold as the pirates and their hostage remain adrift in an enclosed lifeboat. The high seas drama began yesterday when Somali pirates boarded the US-flagged ship Maersk Alabama and were thwart ed in their attempt to hijack the freighter due to the crew of about 20 lock ing themselves in a room and later overpowering some of the pirates. The pirates subsequently retreated to the lifeboat with the captain, who sur rendered to the pirates to keep his men safe. The United States Navy has a destroyer close to the lifeboat, with more war ships on the way. The group, based in Florida, says that it is being forced to take $1 million every day from its $5 billion endowment to cover day-to-day costs and expenses. Since 2001, the endowment, which is tied to the stock market, has been declining. Donations, another major source of income for the Shriners, are also down. The hospitals have treat ed more than one million children free of charge, and the proposed closing of six hospitals could mean longer drives or a simple lack of care for many patients. The 22 year old pitcher was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Two other passengers died immedi ately and one other is in critical condition. The driver who ran a red light and caused the acci dent fled the scene and was arrested 30 minutes later. Due to previous DUI convictions, the 22-year old could face murder charges. "The Angels' family has suffered a tremendous loss today," Angels' general manager Tony Reagins said in a statement Thursday morning. "We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick's family, friends, loved ones and fans." CNN Girl nearly loses hand in bizarre easter acci dent A young girl's hand was nearly cut off in an Easter Egg hunt when she reached for a bird's egg on an illegal hunting trap. Carina Faerber, 13, thought the trap held a chocolate egg. Instead, it held a bird's egg put there to attract weasels. The girl's screams alerted people walking by, who called emergency services, according to the Austrian Times. The girl was found with her nearly-severed hand hanging by just a thread of flesh. The traps are illegal in Britain but are not banned in Austria if clear warning signs are placed beside them. A huntsman came for ward and claimed respon sibility for setting the ille gal snares.
