April 24 that an experienced stunt man was seriously injured in a ear crash during a chase scene being filmed for a new James Bond movie. Quantum of Solace. starring Daniel Craig, is set to be released later this year. It involved several chase scenes including one in northern Italy, where the crash occurred. A spokesman for the town where the filming is occurring said that the stunt man. who was flown to a hospital in a filming helicopter, crashed the car. an Alfa Romeo, a wall. This accident comes less than a week after a previous car accident, during which an Aston Martin skidded off of a mountain road into a lake. May 2. promises to be one of the must see summer flicks. For those readers unaware of the Marvel comic-hook character of Iron Man. the most you need to know' is that this is yet another super hero movie. Based off the self titled comic-book Iron Man, our hero is none other than Tony Stark, who is played by actor Robert Downey Jr. The film is directed by Jon Favreau. responsible for Elf and the film-adaptation of Zathura. Not only does Favreau have behind-the-scenes experience, but he's also acted quite a bit. Favreau has appeared in 2003" s Daredevil, another Marvel comic-to-film adaptation. The Replacements, in 2000. televi sion's The Sopranos and even the recent comedy, The Break-Up (2006). co-starring with Vince Vaughn. Iron Man looks to be a break through for Favreau. having been them first film he's worked on that has implemented computer generated imagery (CGI). On the basis of this. Favreau stated. "I think that now. through motion-capture and the integration of miniatures with CGI, like in King Kong. I'm start ing to be a lot more convinced by what the technology can do. But the idea of using CGI and relying solely on that to tell your story, those days are past. I think that integrating practical filmmaking and augmenting it with CGI is the key to making it an emotion ally involved story." Above all else, this was the particular reason that Favreau chose Downey to portray the role of Stark. "The best and worst moments of Robert's life have been in the public eye.” the director explained. "He had to find an inner balance to over come obstacles that went far beyond his career. That's Tony Stark. Robert brings a depth that goes beyond a comic-book char acter who is having trouble in high school, or can't get the girl." Favreau felt that Downey's questionable past of alcohol and drug abuse made him an appro priate choice for the role. In turn, Stark himself is quite the drinker, battling high-tech, superpowered villains along with battling alco holism. Favreau also felt Downey could make Stark a "lik able asshole.” but also depict an authentic and captivating emo tional journey once he won over the audience. Other big names, such as Gwyneth Paltrow. Terrence Howard and Samuel L. Jackson also take on famous characters from the Marvel universe. Paltrow takes on the role of Virginia "Pepper” Potts. April 24 to three years in prison tor failing to file tax returns The sentence of three years was the maximum requested by prosecutors. Assistant Attorney General Nathan J. Hochman said that he wanted to make an example of the famous actor. "Snipes' long prison sentence should send a loud and crystal clear message to all tax defiers that if they engage in similar lax defier conduct, they face joining him." he said. Federal prosecutors claimed that Snipes' crimes have been going on for as long as a decade. They claim that, while the exact amount is in dispute. Snipes avoided paying as much as $l5 million in tax returns by sending money overseas. However. Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman says that Snipes will be treated just as anyone else would. "There is no secret for mula that eliminates a person's tax obligations, nor are there any special exceptions." he said. With Snipes in legal troubles, the Hollywood community responded strongly. Actors Denzel Washington and Woody Harrellson, two long-time friends of Snipes, wrote person al letters testifying to the man's character. Thirty-nine pages of testimonials were presented by defense attorneys. CNN reports. "[Snipes was] like a tree, like a mighty oak," wrote Washington. “Many who know him have witnessed the fruit of his labors, have sat in his shade and even been protected by his presence. 1 am proud of him, proud to call him a fellow thes pian and most importantly, proud to call him a friend." Another witness, reports CNN, recalled how Snipes had trained airline personnel on safety techniques following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 without seeking payment or media atten tion. Snipes has largely been quiet on the issue. Aside from a loud “Wow” outside of the court room, Snipes didn't speak to fans who waited for him.
