Carmona, who went 19-7 with a 3.06 ERA last year for the Tribe, is off to a fast start this season, going 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 13 • • innings. -Hal and Hank Steinbrenner were made co chairpersons of the New York Yankees on Thursday by their father, owner George Steinbrenner. George Steinbrenner, who has controlled the team since 1973, is chairperson, essentially the same as his previous title of chairman. The sons took over supervision of the team's daily operations last year. NCAA -Penn State Football coach Joe Paterno decid ed to delay his contract talks until the end of the 2008-2009 season. Penn State president Graham Spanier told the Associated Press, through an e-mail, that both the school and Paterno agree a new deal is not necessary right now. Paterno is entering his 43 season as head coach at Penn State. NFL -The Miami Dolphins have begun contract negotiations with Michigan's Jake Long and Qtiio ; State’s Vernon Gholston The Dolphins lave the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, which will be held April 26-27. Long, who is considered the top offensive ineman in the upcoming NFL Draft, faced Gholston in November, when Ohio State defeated Michigan 14-3. -Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najah Davenport was acquitted of a misdemeanor domestic violence charge Wednesday, April 10 in Cleveland Municipal Court. Davenport had been accused of slapping and punching Anita Person, the mother of his 5- year-oid son at her Cleveland home in October. He was also acquitted on his misdemeanor for child endangering and unlawful restraint. The men kept their undefeated conference record alive after defeating Lake Erie College 4-3 and 8-7 at home on Thursday, April 11. The Blue and White are currently No. 1 in the AMCC with a record of 8-0 and an impressive overall record of 18-4. Both games in the Lake Erie doublehead er were close ones. Behrend managed to squeak by, winning each game by one run. The Behrend Lions were the first to score in game-one in the second inning, when soph omore Ryan Liddle drove a blast into the outfield, bringing in the first run. Lake Erie responded, grabbing two runs and took a 2- 1 lead in the top of the fifth. Tied at two, Lake Erie pulled ahead yet again in the sev enth to make it 3-2, but Behrend would tie it up to send the game into extra innings. The Blue and White brought home the win in the bottom of the ninth, when David Smith brought in Tom Paskinski with a walk-off RBI. As golfers tee-off and test Augusta National, fans of the sport have wondered, will someone even compete with Tiger? Woods, who is the favorite to win the Masters, finished even after the first day. Even though Woods is four strokes back from the leaders, no one is counting him out yet. In the four events in 2008 that Woods has played in, he has won three and finished No. 5 in the OPT' the lead at the Masters? WGC-CA Championship at Doral. Still ranked No. 1 in the world, Woods is ready to take on day two of the prestigious Augusta National and hopes for better luck this year. “Generally, this is a golf course where you can make birdies, but the weather conditions didn't allow us to do that last year, Woods said. Normally, you could shoot under par, and this golf course over the years has been much more forgiving than the U.S. Open.” Leading the way after day one was Trevor Immelman and Justin Rose , who shot four under after 18 holes. Rose, who is currently ranked No. 9 in the world, finished No. 5 in last year’s Masters. Immelman was a surprise after day one, but can he continue his strong play into day two? Last year’s Masters’ winner Zach Johnson shot an impressive two under, two back from the leaders. Even though Johnson is down, he was still pleased after day one. “All in all, a pretty good solid round, said Johnson, who shot 35 on the front side and back nine. I'm very, very honored to be the defending champi- between the squads. Behrend got off to a solid start, when they took the lead 2-1 in the second inning. Lake Erie would respond and execute from a few Behrend errors in a three run top of the third. The Lions tied it up 4-4 Loveable lefty Phil Mickelson put together a solid day one, walking into day two at one under. Mickelson started his day ideally, grabbing two birdies on his first two holes. A bogey on hole six slowed Mickelson down, but with only being three back, he is still in contention of another Masters championship. The story of day one was lan Poulter’s hole-in-one on number 16. Poulter hit an eight-iron on the 170 yard par-3 that is nicknamed The Behrend Beacon I in the bottom of the third. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Lake Erie Storm would gain some leverage after driving in three runs again and taking the lead 7-4. After tying it up again, Behrend sealed the deal in the seventh inning, with the bases loaded, RBI bunt single from Paskinski to give the men their 13 con secutive victory. The Behrend Lions are off to a much stronger start than the 2007 season, which resulted in a 12-6 AMCC record and a loss to Pitt-Greensburg in the first round of the postseason tournament. Trailing Behrend in the No. 2 spot in AMCC standings is Frostburg State with a record of 6-2 followed by a tie between La Roche College and Pitt-Greensburg at No. 3 with a record of 6-4. Next up for the Lions is a game at Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday, April 12 followed by a home game on Sunday. April 13 against Frostburg State. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. as the Lions look to continue to tack on more victories to their season and keep an undefeated AMCC record.
