Coming into the season, the Lady Lions were defending champions of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and had high hopes for another successful season in 'O7. After a disappointing showing at their annual Herb Lauffer Tournament, the girls struggled to get back on track and found themselves with a 1-5-2 record, going into division al play. Senior Jess Carlson said that she felt her final season at Behrend was slipping from her fin- gers. "We just could not get it going in the early part of the season. We struggled a bit, but we knew if we stayed together as a team, we could get back on Senior Katie Ritchey helps Behrend down Frostburg the AMCC's and return track.' With the team in disarray, the girls pulled it together and walked away with big conference victories over Mt. Aloysius, Medaille, and La Roche. The girls found themselves one game under .500 and the momentum that they needed to save their season. Senior Emily Rogan said she felt the confidence of the team start to shift after the win against La Roche. "We always had great team chemistry; it just took us a while to get everything working on the field. Having this win ning streak really got the wheels turning." The ladies went on to beat Lake Erie, Pitt- Greensburg, and Pitt-Bradford and took their six game winning streak into their biggest game of the year, Frostburg State. Both teams will be coming off of a bye week with two very different mindsets. The Broncos are coming into the game on a three-game losing streak, while the Steelers are coming into the game with high momentum after a victory over Seattle. The bye week seemed to be somewhat of a bless ing and a burden for the Steelers. The time off gave a few key injured players the chance to rest and be ready for this week's game, while on the other hand it interrupted the momentum they had after beating the Seahawks. Of the injured players were Hines Ward, who missed the last two games due to a sprained knee, Troy Polamalu (abdomen), and Santonio Holmes (hamstring). All three players are expected to play on Sunday. The game plan for the Steelers is to run the ball as much as possible. Denver is in last place in the NFL in rushing defense, allowing an average of 187.6 yards per game. The Steelers are in second place on the offensive rush, averaging 167 yards a game. Willie Parker carries the majority of the yards averaging around 100 yards per game. Also rl ,rNj The Behrend Beacon I have met for the women's soccer title eight times, with the series tied at 4-4. Last year. Behrend lost to Frostburg in the regular season, but heat them in the AMCC title game. Frostburg State came into the game with a I 2-game winning streak. Carlson believed that the regular season champs could come down to this game. "We have been taking things one game at a time, hut Frostburg is always our biggest focus. We heat them last year wanted this win had. coNTRintiTiNG Puitini Now, our coal is to win to the NCAA Tournament again, - said Demay Junior Kim Chapman was named AMCC player of the week after scoring the only goal in the contest against Frostburg State. Without having a loss since Sept. 20, Behrend finds themselves in first place in the AMCC, with one game left against Penn State Altoona on Saturday. Penn State Altoona has been a surprise this year, improving their record from last year's finish of 6-7-2 to currently 10-4-1. - They have a new coach this year, which obviously has helped them become one of the better teams in the divi sion. It is going to he a challenge this weekend,- Carlson said. The Lady Lions will try to continue their amazing streak and win their first regular season conference title in Altoona. contributing to the rushing game recently is Najeh Davenport with 205 total yards, averaging 7.5 yards per carry. With two key receivers back in the game however, you can expect to see some passing as well early on in the game. Aside from Ward and Holmes, Heath Miller leads the Steelers with 17 receptions. As for the Broncos, they come off of their bye week simply looking to end their three-game losing streak, including their most devastating home game loss on Oct. 7 against the San Diego Chargers. 41- 3. If Denver wants any chance of winning the game Sunday, they need to focus on shutting down Parker and Davenport. Cornerback Champ Bailey will most likely give the receivers and Big Ben some trouble like last year when he nabbed two interceptions off Roethlisberger. Denver has made a few positions changes, mak ing you wonder how stable a team can he when they are changing positions this far into the season. Some of the changes include Chris Myers for Tom Nalen at center and Chris Kuper will start in his first offensive regular season game at guard. The Broncos have defeated the Steelers in three straight regular season home games, however lost to Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship two sea sons ago, 34-17. Kickoff in Denver is set for 8:15 p.m. and will be broadcasted on NBC. for the tide and chances are. it will come down to us again this year.- Behrend heat Frostburg 1-0 in Behrend's final home game of the year. It was the first time Behrend beat Frostburg in the regular season since 2001. Senior Danielle Demay said it was one of the goals she wanted to accomplish before her career ended, here at Behrend.
