The local teams near the Erie area also have strong teams that look to make a serious push towards the playoff and more this year. The Pittsburgh Penguins were the surprise team in 2006, increasing their win total by 25 games from the year before and making their first playoff appearance since 2001. Led by reigning league MVP Sidney Crosby and last year's Calder Trophy winner (rookie of the year) Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins have a dynasty that could potentially rival the Edmonton Oilers of the 80's. The Penguins will rely on young goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to carry a defense that was ranked at the bottom of the league last year. Another local team that has potential as the Penguins have is the Buffalo Sabres. Led by scoring machine Thomas Vanek and the explo sive Maxim Afinogenov, the Sabres will look to get back to the Stanley Cup finals, which they have not been to since 1999. Vezina Trophy (top goaltender) finalist Ryan Miller will be counted on to anchor the Sabres to another Northeast divi sion championship. The Sabres biggest task this year will be replacing last year's co-captains Chris Drury and Daniel Briere, who left via free agency over the summer. Drury and Briere com bined for 164 regular season points for the Sabres last season. Look for young centermen Tim Connolly and Derek Roy to fill the shoes for their departed captains. This weeks game should be a tough test but we will continue with our solid offense, defense, and goaltending, try to score first for a change, and play a full sixty minute game." The team has began with an outstanding start, already having four players with hat tricks, which include DJ Craven, Justin Duchini, Brian Hammel and Josh Horvath. The team is optimistic for anoth er winning season but on the downside first line sen ior, left-winger Dan Thiessen was injured in the sec ond period of Sunday's game against CCAC.
