Over the weekend, the men traveled to Westminster where they ended in a 1-1 draw after dou ble overtime. Salim scored the men's only goal of the game. Image Sports Network set to Broadcast Behrend Sports By Kayla Wright staff writer krim 5205 Ccepsu edu Behrend sports have been contracted with Image Sports Network to broadcast eight home games, from men's and women s basketball to volleyball. This will give students the opportunity to watch games instead of actually attending the games. Some games will be shown live and some will be delayed. Ultimately, it will make watching games more convenient, but it will also put more pressure on athletes to perform well. The sports that will be broadcasted include volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. Sports that will be broadcasted live are women's volleyball and men's and women's basketball. Baseball and softball will be delayed. Students will be able to watch these broadcasts on channel 20 on Time Warner Cable. With these broadcasts making games more easily accessible to the public, some athletes are feeling the pressure to perform better than before. Freshman softball player Brooke Callen stated, "Being recorded makes me nervous because I've been on TV for a state championship game for soft ball, and I didn't do very well; we ended up losing. There is definitely more pressure to perform well because you see the cameras and know more peo ple are going to see you. I feel I might try too hard and end up unsuccessful." Others have a more positive view of this devel opment. Freshman baseball player Adam Hartwig commented, "I believe that having games broad casted on Image Sports Network is going to be a ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK great experience for the whole team; every year we are competing to win the AAMC and having games broadcasted will definitely have us more "pumped up" for those games because people will be watch ing us on TV. For me, I always want to do the best I can. When you have a game that is being broad casted, it puts some added pressure on you, but any baseball player will tell you that they like to be in pressure situations." Fans have mixed feelings about this improve ment. Freshman Andy Double commented, "I only follow certain sports, so it depends on what's show ing. Baseball is the only thing I'd watch." With the variety of sports being broadcasted, however, there will be something for everyone. Yet some aren't interested in any of the sports being broadcasted. Freshman Mark Medwid com mented, "I wish they'd offer more variety when it comes to sports broadcasted. I would watch soccer and hockey." Broadcasting these games does have its positive side. Many people are unable to find time to go to the fields or courts to support the teams; with this network, those people will be able to keep up with the team and their homework. With the convenience of this broadcast some might think that the number of fans attending games may decrease. Callen agreed, "The amount of people attending games will probably decrease because people with homework could easily access the games by turning on the TV." Regardless, this new improvement to Behrend sports will allow more fans to watch their favorite teams. Volleyball drops heartbreaker to Grove City By Matt Waronker sports editor mbwso2B@psu.edu Momentum. Simply put, it can either be a team's clos est friend or worst enemy. "The flow of momen tum is a very difficult aspect of the game to con trol," explains Penn State Behrend volleyball head coach Phil Pisano. "But when it gets going for a team it's very hard to Pisano's team under stands this basic principle all too well after experi encing the effects of neg ative momentum first hand this past Tuesday against non-conference rival Grove City. The Lady Lions, looking to avenge a shutout loss against Grove City from earlier this season, fell yet again to the Wolverines in a five set heartbreaker at the Junker Center. Although the result of their second stint against the visiting Wolverines mirrored that of their first, the Lady Lions improved considerably from their early season shutout loss against Grove City in which they were defeated by an average of nine points in each set. Controlling the tempo early, the visiting Wolverines took possession of game one 30-25. However, with strong performances by freshman Danielle Woods who led the Behrend offense with 15 kills, and sophomore Sheila Ogden who contributed with 12 kills, the Lady Lions were able to regain their composure and take the second and third games of the match. "They [Grove City] played very aggressive in game four," said Pisano. "We relaxed a little bit in the begin ning which we shouldn't have let happen. They're just a solid team who han dled the pressure well." In game five, Behrend exploded out of the gates taking a com manding 12-4 lead. The Lady Lions eight point advantage, however, proved to be too slim and after a handful of mistakes Grove City passed Behrend for the 15-13 vic tory. The Lady Lions open the AMCC regular season with a trip to Pittsburgh this Saturday where they will face La Roche. Behrend will then host Hilbert and Pitt- Greensburg before hitting the road again as they travel to Ohio to meet Lake Erie College. Currently the Lady Lions sit atop conference stand ings and will look to remain in that position for the dura tion of the season or for as long as their momentum can keep them there. "We played way too conservative in game five," said Pisano. "It seemed like we got too conservative as we got closer to the win. We wanted the game so badly that with the lead we played not to lose instead of playing to win." With the loss Behrend drops to 9-5 overall. Behrend's next four games mark the start of AMCC conference play.
