Students at McDowell High School are organizing Art for a Cause, a fundraiser that will benefit Holy Trinity's Outreach Program. The members of Art for a Cause learned about the local homeless rate in a tol erance class at McDowell High School, and wanted to do something to help the local homeless. Chair mem ber Allison Samol said "When I learned of the large number of people that are homeless in Erie, I wanted to help and we thought this would be a good idea." The students are planning an art WWVV.TOYOTALIVEWEB.COM show and auction that will be available to all members of the community. Art for a Cause will host their fundraiser on Saturday. May 5, 2007. from 6-10 p.m. at McDowell High School's North Gym. Admission to the fundraiser will he free and donations will be accepted. In addition, memhers of Art for a Cause are looking for people who would like to donate art. They are accepting any type of art and dona tions would he greatly appreciated. International Institute Project continued from page 1 In addition to the many fundraising locations on Behrend's campus, the International Institute Project is also sending letters to local business', where they hope to place cans for cash donation. "Really anything that will help the International Institute help the refugees will be gladly accept ed. We are not only trying to raise money and supplies, but we also want people to know their stories, so we will have pictures and information about some of the refugees at our tables so people can really see who they are helping, - said Wilson. All proceeds raised by the International Institute Project will go to the International Institute of Erie. Until recently, Patty Pasky McMahon, the Director and Nurse Practitioner of the Health and Wellness center, was the only employ ee certified to give the HIV/AIDS test. Now the center's Medical Assistant. Lisa Fatica, has become certified in HIV/AIDS testing and counseling. The importance of these services becomes apparent when stu dents are consulted about their sex life. Freshman Frank Nagy said that he thinks "Safe sex is extremely important whether it is through the use of condoms or birth control. College students are, for the most part, sexually active in some way, but very few are engaged or married, or in any situation where they can tolerate a child coming into their lives. Through the services of the Health and Wellness center, the education that is provided by the university, and the student's awareness of the stan dards of safe sex, such a problem can be effectively prevented until adult hood, or whenever they are ready to engage in something as serious as unprotected sex or family planning. fhi R.l
