Call Underhill By Kathleen O'Brien contributing writer k r! 0501120 ptt.edu Hopping out of the white pickup truck he drives through the quad of the Penn State Erie apartments, Bin Underhill looks energetic and determined. And he is, as he plays a vital role on campus. For the past eight years. he has worked as part of the main tenance crew for Housing, taking care of various repairs and problems that arise on campus. Dressed in jeans, a heavy jacket, and a Penn State baseball cap, Underhill works swiftly yet efficiently. On this day, he is changing several burnt-out light bulbs in a Behrend student's apartment. Underhill does any and all maintenance and repair work that is needed around campus, from plumbing problems to refrig erator and stove repairs to heating and electrical problems. "The repair work that needs to be done around here fills a broad spectrum. Every repair is different, - Underhill said. The most interesting repair he says he's done on campus happened a few years ago in Lawrence Hall: A dead trout under a ceiling tile had to be removed. "How the trout got there in the first place remains a mystery, - Underhill said. The students he meets while he's working also keep him entertained. Underhill can often be found talking to students around campus, and he has become friends with many of them. "Ninety nine percent of the students I meet are helpful and friendly, - he said. "The students are courteous and that makes working around them a lot easier," he explained. Though friendly, college students can also he destructive. Underhill makes mention of one of the few annoyances he has found over his time working at Behrend, "It really disappoints me to come upon neglectful situations in students' rooms. I've wit nessed some situations that are purely safety issues, like fire extinguishers being let off on purpose. That's disappointing for me to see. - "Some things students do are just stupid, like punching holes in the walls. Some of these kids just need to grow up," he went on to say. Overall, how ever, Underhill likes his job.
