Behrend receives large donation Penn State Erie has received a generous donation from late Erie native, Shirley L. Roth. The money will be going to the engineering department at Behrend. Roth also donated money to Edinboro's nursing program as well as the Visiting Nurses Association's Hospice of Erie County, International Institute, Shriners Hospital for Children in Erie and the American Cancer Society. There was a total of $417,000 donated to Behrend. This could have been considered unusual seeing as she had no prior ties to either Behrend or Edinboro. When she died, she had a fortune of $1.2 million. "It's rather exceptional; we just wish that we would have known her so we could have thanked her," said Jack Burke, Penn State Erie chancellor. Friends speculated that she donated to honor her brother: vvtits was very interested in radio and activities related to engineering. Roth graduated from Academy High School in 1946. Throughout her life, she remained unmarried and without chil dren. She lived with her brother until his death in 1994.
