CDS offers seniors seminars, services By Erin Ahlgren staff writer The Career Development Center located in the Reed Union Building, first floor, offers a number of ser vices to assist you with your job and/ or graduate school search. Over the course of the semester, a number of Career Series and Senior Seminars are offered through the CDC. Some of these include “Re sumes & Cover Letters: Capture Em ployers’ Attention the Right Way” and the popular “On-Campus Re cruiting Orientation: Let us help you prepare for your upcoming job search”. These seminars can help you to re fine your resume and cover letter, while getting ahead in the search for a job. The On-Campus Recruiting seminar is required for students in terested in participating in interviews for full-time positions being posted by employers coming to Behrend, University Park and Harrisburg. Although most students find re cruiting and resume seminars the most useful, some seminars that may be most helpful for humanities ma jors include: “Working in Govern ment- An overview of state and fed eral government jobs and how to get one!” and “Making a Difference While Making a Living- The rewards of a career in social service”. Andrew Watters, associate direc tor of the Career Development Cen ter, encourages students to sign up for the seminars and advises them to see a counselor for assistance with FOCAL POINTS their job search. Not only does the CDC offer a num ber of seminars, they also offer a va riety of other services. Some of those include: mock interviews, e-portfo lio, e-recruiting and Polycom. Watters would like to encourage students to schedule a mock inter view. A mock interview is a video taped practice interview session that can prepare you before you interview “for real.” To schedule, simply call the CDC for an appointment or stop by the office. E-portfolios can help students showcase their educational and pro fessional goals and experiences. Stu dents can create a portfolio with the Penn State site by going to www.eportfolio.psu.edu. The portfo lio is a “student created, personal ized, web-based collection.” An e-portfolio can help students “share examples of their work with potential employers” as well as “demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attributes gained beyond the classroom.” Watters suggests students look into this option because it can be very helpful and can compliment your re sume. E-recruiting, a web-based system can also be helpful for students in their search for a job. The system can offer opportunities for interviews with companies visiting Behrend as well as ones that may not. The posi tions are all full-time and employers select candidates from those students who request interviews with them. Students also have the option of posting their resume with the na- Friday, January 21, 2005 inday’s event was a ce tional database for potential employ- ers to view. To participate in e-recruiting sys tem, students must first attend an OCR orientation program and com plete the registration form. There is a $lO fee for the spring semester. Students who want to check out the system first can log on as a guest to the Web site http:// psu.erecruting.com. Once students have been offered an initial interview, they have the option of using Polycom. Polycom is a video interviewing system that allows employers to interview you from a distance with the sense that you are in the room with them. Both you and the employer would sit in a room looking at each other through a television screen. A micro phone system is placed on the table in front of you, allowing you and the employer to talk to each other. Many larger corporations with multiple locations use this system. It is suggested by Watters, to mention to your potential employers that Polycom is used here at Behrend and can be an option for a first time in terview. Because the system cuts back on travel expenses, it is not only a benefit for you, but employers as well. For more information on the ser vices mentioned or if you have any questions about seminars or services not mentioned here, contact the Ca reer Development Center at (814) 898-6164 or email aew6@psu.edu. And remember: if you haven’t de cided what you would like to major in yet, the CDC can help.
