Friday, November 19,2004 Swim team’s respectively improve season standings Samantha Cibula/Behrend Beacon Sprinter Brittany Yost swam personal best against St. Vincent college in both the 50-yd freestyle and 100-yd backstroke. By Samantha Cibula sports co-editor Nov. 13 the Behrend men and women’s swim teams both improved their records and did it with respect. The teams faced Saint Vincent College men and women’s swim teams who were ex periencing their first competition as a varsity team. The St. Vincent women currently have a roster of 10 but only five women placed in individual events, while the men’s team is carrying two individuals only one swam at the meet. The blue and white went into the meet like any other knowing they were out to produce fast times and compete in qual ity races. The men posted a 59-9 victory, im proving their record to 2-1. The women found their first win of the season with and 82-41 boosting their record to 1-2, just under 500. Inner team competition played a role in the meet for the men. St. Vincent only had one male swimmer, so the men looked to their teammates to push them through the races. In the 100-yd freestyle freshmen An thony Spoto, Matt Seiferth and sopho more Brandon Thiel pushed each other during the quick four laps. Spoto hit the wall first for the men with at time of 51.09; Seiferth drove in a time of 51.52 just out-touched by his fresh man teammate. Thiel finished just short of second with a time of 52.11. The 100- yd freestyle was one out of three events the man winning the race didn’t swim exhibition. “Even though St. Vincent wasn’t able to provide strong competition we were able to get up and race each other,” said Spoto. “I want to push myself and my teammates at the same time.” “ It was St. Vincent’s very first com- INTRAMURAL 3 VS. 3 HOOPS Mon, Nov 15 League A Schodt Brothers 26 Outta Shape 22 StrB Ballin 28 Outta Shape 19 Too Hot for TV 23 Player Haters 22 Schodt Brothers 2 Project Mayhem 20 StrB Ballin 36 Delta Chi 18 Delta Chi 23 Player Haters 21 Leagueß CHS 27 Project Mayhem 1 21 CHS 22 Guns of Navarone 19 Chick Magnets 1 2 Schoolin 0 Chick Magnets 1 24 KDR 1 23 Bottoms Up 42 Guns of Navarone 17 Bottoms Up 48 KDR 1 24 LeagueE KDR 2 2 Perry 0 Juice Guarantee 29 Niagara 20 Birdmen 2 3 Big Guys 0 Juice Guarantee 52 SigTau2 18 Birdmen 46 SigTau2 4 KDR 2 2 3 Big Guys 0 LeagueF Fantastic Four 24 Juice Giant 17 Juice Giant 25 Fockers 20 Sig Tau 1 2 TKE 3 0 Sig Tau 1 39 Fockers 10 Fantastic Four 2 Sweet FitchyO Tue, Nov 16 LeagueC Big Ho 38 Chocolate 19 Green 32 TKE 1 21 Nose Candy 27 Project Mayhem 3 21 petition as a new team, I didn’t want its swimmers to get discouraged,” said head coach Jen Slack on swimming many of the races as exhibition. Throughout the meet Behrend men swam exhibition races 15 times. There was only one event plus diving that there wasn’t anyone swimming exhibition in the race. “Although our athletes swam exhibi tion they still had to race hard,” said Slack. Doubling St. Vincent’s score the women, like the men, swam exhibition a number of times throughout the meet. In four races the women had exhibition swimmers. “ I didn’t want their athletes to be dis couraged, instead St. Vincent was able to swim us and see how a team can grow and develop over a five year period,” said Slack. The Lady Lion’s were also able to capitalize by pushing each other through the races. Sophomore Brittany Yost swam personal best in the 50-yd freestyle and 100-yd backstroke. In each race she was pushed by her own teammates. “Swimming against our own team mates pushed us to swim fast times even though there were no girls to swim on the other team, which is important to get fast seed times for conferences at the end of the season,” said sophomore Alexis Puhala. Freshman Melissa Pilewski set the only new team record for the ladies. Her time in the 100-yd breaststroke of 1:13.61 broke that of former Behrend standout Tara Braden, who is currently in finishing her last semester of college. After improving their records both the women and men look to gear up for tough races and head to head competi tion Saturday at Gannon and Sunday at Nazareth. The team is in the North Division and play in College Hockey East, which is a league associated with ACHA division 111 hockey. Even though Behrend’s hockey team is not a school run sport, they are an extremely competitive club team. Behrend plays other teams from University of Pittsburgh, St. Vincent College, Indiana Univer sity of Pennsylvania, Case Western University, and more. The team has three coaches, Head Coach Derrick Gates, assistant coaches Mike Cook and Aaron Patterson. “We have great expectations for this season,” said junior forward Rich Sgrignoli. “Things are looking pretty good for us right now.” On Nov. 6 and Nov. 13 the hockey team pulled off back to back wins in division games against Case Western and Allegheny.
