Tom Workman, CENBD 03 United Way and Behrend make a difference Students, staff raise money for less fortunate By Samantha Baldensperger staff writer The United Way at Behrend is conducting a donation campaign to raise money. Part of the campaign is the Residence Hall Helping Hands Auction on Oct. 28 to aid in the raising of money. There has been a goal set for the students of $3,000 and for the faculty a goal of $47,000 all totaling $50,000 for the entire donation campaign. Faculty and staff can donate money either through a bi-monthly or monthly deduc tion from their payroll or through a one-time donation. “If everyone gives something and some give more than they did last year,” said Campaign Coordinator Judy Glembocki; “We’ll be suc cessful. It is going to take everyone’s partici pation to raise the money needed. Students are strongly encouraged to help in anyway that they can with donations. Realistically, to just reach the goal of $3,000 each student would have to donate less than one dollar.” If a student wishes to donate money to the drive they can stop by the RUB information desk. Donations can be made through cash or check. The student will receive a receipt to be used for tax purposes if needed. Also this month there will be a Residence Life Helping Hands United Way Auction. It will take place on Oct. 28 at 5:15 p.m. The auction will be held in McGarvey Commons. Many things will be auctioned off to raise money. The money raised will go to the United Way at Behrend campaign to help reach the goal of $50,000. Another program that people should be aware of is the human sundae. There will be tables in front of Bruno’s and donations are put into individual’s jars. The person with the most money becomes a human sundae. On Oct. 29 there will be a haunted house in Senat Hall, donations can also be made there. All the money raised by these activities will go to benefit the United Way. Behrend is one of 700 companies and orga nizations participating by running donation campaigns. The money raised is going to ben efit organizations such as: the Red Cross, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Salvation Army, the Crime Victim Center and many others. There are 40 agencies that benefit from this money. This donation campaign is a more efficient method of raising money so that the individual agencies do not have to conduct their own fundraising projects. This allows them to de vote their time to important work for the orga nization and community. The United Way campaign here has been go ing on for many years. Last year this campus raised a total of $51,333 for the cause. The students raised nearly $2,500 of this money. This year the United Way is celebrating its 90th anniversary, giving students even more incen tive to help them reach their goal. Every dol lar will be put to good use in the community. The Credit Solutions Dept can help! Fall open house in two weeks By Kim McCray staff writer This year’s fall Penn State Open House is sched uled for Oct. 30 for all Penn State Campuses. The Open House is Behrend’s major fall recruitment event. Unlike previous years, this year’s Open House is part of the larger University-wide pro gram called “Penn State Day.” Not only is every campus of Penn State recruiting on this date but October 30 has been designated “Penn State Day,” by Governor Rendell. For more information on “Penn State Day” visit http://live.psu.edu/story/ 8520. Open House is a program for high school jun iors and seniors and their families. It is also geared towards adult students who are considering return ing to college and potential transfer students. About 300 prospective students attend Behrend’s fall Open House every year. This year, however, Behrend is hoping to see 400 or more students attend. Including family members, 1200 visitors are expected on campus Oct. 30. Many activities are being held throughout the day for prospective students. One of the main events of the day is the Information Fair held in the McGarvey Commons in the Reed Union Build ing. Representatives from the four academic schools. Division of Undergraduate Studies, Stu dent Affairs, Admissions, Financial Aid, Police and Safety, ROTC and various other offices will be in attendance to highlight the programs and services offered here at Behrend. For students thinking about attending Behrend, there will be many presentations about admissions, academic programs and other areas of interest. The Information Fair runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. One of the most important aspects of the Open House program is the campus tour. Lion Ambas- per? "I think it is not very likely, but there still might be a chance. Because of what happened last election, I think they'll be more careful about it this time." Karina Semiletova, FNCO3 loin The Used Car Store at Rick Weaver's Cars,Trucks and SUV's; some starting at $1,500 and always a great selection The Behrend Beacon | "Yes. I think a lot of students don't know the voting regulations and the complications of the absentee ballots." Heather Saibena, ELISHO7 sadors will be giving tours throughout the entire day. Tours run for approximately one hour and 15 minutes. For a complete listing of events and ac tivities taking place throughout the day, visit http:/ /pennstatebehrend.psu.edu/admissions/undergrad/ openhouseindex. htm. For the Open House, much student involvement was sought out in putting the program together. In addition to the Lion Ambassadors, there are stu dents from athletics, music groups, Greek organi zations, Resident Assistants and various clubs and organizations who will be helping. All students involved in the Open House will be wearing spe cial shirts and will be easy to identify. If there is still anyone or any organization who is interested in helping with the program they can contact Donna Fuller (dmf9@psu.edu) as soon as possible in the admissions office. It is a great opportunity for student groups to increase their visibility with the incoming students for Fall 2003. “The Oct. 30 Open House is a great time for both prospective students and their parents because it offers everyone so much to see and do. There are many people to talk with, like current Behrend students, professors and various student support staff. This program also gives student groups on campus an opportunity to showcase their groups and hopefully increase interest for Fall 2005,” said Mary-Ellen Madigan, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. Since this program is a university-wide event, students can see commercials about the program this week and continuing through next week on MTV and ESPN. Local network television stations are also running commercials to promote the pro grams next week. Also, all students who visit this fall Open House will receive a T-shirt. In addition to this Open House program, there are two more scheduled for next year. They are scheduled for February 19 and April 2.
