There won’t be a sign up sheet to donate blood. It was found to be more effective to have the students walk in and donate instead of scheduling a specific time to be there. All blood types are needed. Patty McMahon, Donor Chair, said that she hopes a lot of people show up because there is a need for blood. She expects approximately 70 to 80 students to show up and donate to the Community Blood Bank. Before a person donates blood, it is necessary that the phlebotomist does a mini-physical and the donor spends good amount of time in the refresh ment area before and after donation. The entire process takes approximately 45 minutes, while just donating blood takes 6 to 10 minutes. While most Behrend Auto Club’s car show a success By Jeff Smen staff writer They’re the club that can talk to you about turbo systems, awesome six gear engines and tell you why your car won’t start due to your car starter dying out. Some call these guy “gear heads” for the amount of knowledge they have and for what they can do to your average car. They’re the Auto Club and they know how to put on quite a spectacular show. The Auto Club held its annual fall car show last Friday with much success. Cars were always pull ing in and out of the lot and everywhere you looked people were having fun checking out some fast and furious cars. With a little bit of old and a little bit of new, the show offered various cars that any car fan in stock new car or truck! ns 'j'J2 "John Kerry, because I think he stands for better opinions. Nicole Eller, Mobile Drive Coordinator at the Community Blood Bank, says “It is important that we have university sponsored blood drives, such as Behrend College, because it is an extremely val ued asset to us here at the Community Blood Bank. Not only do the blood donations boost local blood supply but they also introduce young adults to the life saving process of volunteer blood donation.” The Community Blood Bank supplies blood to all the hospitals of Erie, Elk, Kane and Warren Counties. The Community Blood Bank is the only supplier for these counties. This is why it is impor tant to obtain new donors every day. They rely solely on volunteer blood donors to provide 100 percent of the blood transfused. There is no substitute for blood. That is why they rely on donors. Approxi mately 32,000 pints of blood are used in America everyday. For every pint a person donates, three lives can be saved. A person can donate every eight weeks, or 56 days. The show averaged 30-40 cars which included a 5.0 turbo Ford Mustang with over 600 horse power, several Volkswagen GTIs, and classic muscle cars both foreign and American made. It wouldn’t be unusual to see a car there with a huge exaust sys tem, hood scup, turbo charged, and have a built in mini television for their DVD player. Some of the cars have even been in national competitions with some winning different awards. The show not only featured cars, but also several different types of mo- torcycles. Bryan Chambers, a member of the Auto Club said, "1 thought the vehicle turn out was good. Add ing something like a raffle could bring more people and cars to the next show.” Darrell Pearson is also a member of the Auto Club, bringing his 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 to invoice on any "I think Bush. So, I think it's pretty even right Connie Chung, DUS, 04 blood drive The future of our local and national blood sup ply depends on the young people that are donating now and throughout their entire lives. Donating blood is a simple and easy process. In order to donate blood, a person must meet the requirements. The requirements include good health, weighing at least 110 pounds, and at least 17 years of age. Eller also said that “one of the most important steps in preparation of donating is to eat a good and hearty meal beforehand.” If students aren’t able to make the blood drive here at Behrend on Wednesday, they can go to the Community Blood Bank at 2646 Peach Street and donate there. For more information about donating blood, stu dents may use the Community Blood Banks website, www.fourhearts.org. On the website, there is a camera which was placed on a donor seat to enable prospective donors to see the process them selves. If you cannot make this Wednesdays blood drive, ASA will be sponsoring a blood drive this Febru ary as well as next October. the show. Darrell said, “I think it went well; there seemed to be decent number of people there." For next fall’s show Pearson said, “Maybe spread the word better for the fall car show. We tried to get a band for this one, but that didn’t pan out, hope fully in the fall we will have a band.” Leo Juarez attended the show and said, “I think the show went really well, and there were some of the sweetest cars there I’ve ever seen. For next year’s show I hope to see even more cars. It would be awesome if someone brought a Diablo, my personal favorite.” Hopefully the auto club will be putting on their show next fall or even consider a spring show if possible. Everyone there looked like they had fun and even the people showing off their cars looked like they were having fun telling about how hard work and determination made their car that much better.
