Kevin Fiorenzo & Amy Frizzell, _sports editors Fall sports wrap ups Men’s soccer team beats Frostburg for AMCC crown The men’s soccer team had perhaps its most suc cessful season this past fall, winning the AMCC title and advancing to its first ever NCAA Touma- After capturing the regular season title with a 5- 1 conference record, the Lions made their way to the finals where they faced Frostburg State. Behrend came away with a 1-0 victory in that game. There impressive conference season and title then led to the squad getting the team’s first ever bid to the NCAA Tournament In the tournament, the Lions were faced with the daunting task of playing defending champ Mes siah College. Unfortunately, Messiah over whelmed the Lions and came away with a 3-0 vic tory. Though the season ended on a losing note, it couldn’t take away the accomplishments the team Women’s soccer takes second place in AMCC Championships Although it fell short in the end, the women’s all-conference first team, soccer team played another strong season in the fall Crawford and Newland had eight and seven of 2003 in advancing to the " goals, respectively, over conference finals In the regular season, the women racked up a 5-1 AMCC record. Their only loss came in a 4-1 defeat from Frostburg in the last regular season game of the season. In the conference tour nament, the Lady Lions again faced Frostburg, but fell short once more, 4-2. Though the season ended in disappointment, the women had much to be proud of. Four players, sophomores Michelle Newland, Heather Crawford and Stephanie Bowen and fresh man goaltender Dara Nielsen, were named to the Women's tennis team falls short at AMCCs The women’s tennis team endured a disap pointed season last fall that culminated with a fourth place finish in the AMCC Tournament. The Lady Lions finished out the regular sea son with a 6-11 overall record, 3-3 in the AMCC. While the regular season was underwhelming for the women, they hoped to rebound with a strong peformance in the AMCCs. Unfortunately, the team was unable to contest very much for the conference title. Leading the way for Behrend was senior Andy Laver. Laver led the Lions in goals (10), assists (6) and points (26). Hordych finished the season as the AMCC leader in shutouts with nine. He is also the Lions’ career leader in shutouts. Members of the all-conference second team were freshman Stanley Kawessi-Katongole and sophomores Mark Cipriani and Brian Blaszczyk. Honorable Mention went to sophomore Justin Reese. goals with nine. Sophomore Kacie Bums and senior Erin Maurer both received Honorable Mentions in the confer- In the doubles events, the team’s No. 1 and No. 3 pairings both lost in the first round. The No. 2 team of junior Christy Leininger and freshman Jenna Yankowski advanced to the fi nals, where they lost to Chatham College. In the singles events, the women fared slightly better, advancing three players to the finals of their flights. At N 0.3, Leininger lost her final match to Chatham’s N 0.3 player. Yankowski lost a three set match, also to Chatham. Finally, No. 1 seed sophomore Amy Frizzell also lost in the finals to Frostburg State. For their efforts in reaching the finals of their flights, these players were named to the all-con ference second team. While the season ended disappointingly, the team has reason to be optimistic because they are returning five of last season’s six starters. Nielsen recorded 60 saves in her first year. Nielsen also tied for the AMCC lead in saves with nine. Members of the sec ond team were senior Mandy Gesuale and sophomore Holly Greiner. Greiner led the team in points with 28 and tied for the lead in Cross country sets new yround Women regionally ranked The men's cross country team, led by a crew of newcomers, recorded a second place finish this past season in the AMCC Tounament. With 35 points, the men finished just behind the All three were named to the AMCC first team. Junior Tim Schultheis was also named to the first team. For his efforts all season, Ruffo was named the AMCC Newcomer of the Year. The women’s cross country team ended on a down note as its top five finishers in the AMCC tournament were disqualified. Because of confusion over the race route, the top five finishers, all Behrend runners, were disquali fied for taking the wrong route. The only member of the team to make the all conference team was freshman Bethany Crooks. Regardless of the way the season ended, the team earned several accolades. Junior Jessica Knapp was named the AMCC Runner of the Year and fresh man Leslie Gentile was the Newcomer of the Year. Head coach Dave Cooper was named the Coach of the Year. The team was also ranked sixth regionally for two consecutive weeks Men's golf team finishes second in AMCC The men's golf team competed in a successful season this past fall, finishing in second place at the AMCC tournament. During the regular season, the team played in several events where they had a string of third place finishes at the Behrend Invitational, ECAC Championships and the ECACs at Skidmore. In early October, the team traveled to Laßoche, where they competed in the conference champi- onship. There, they finished with a team score of 329, good for second place behind winner Penn State Men’s water polo begins to rebuild The men’s water polo team en- dured a rebuilding season this past fall as the team finished with a disappointing 4-25 record The team played in several nvitationals that will give itexperience in the future Some of the team’s destina- :ions were Grove City, Bucknell, Princeton, the Eastern Champi- onships and CWPA Champion- The squad’s four wins all came against frequent opponent Mercyhurst College While the season ended disap- pointingly, there is reason for the team to be optimistic Only one senior was a mem ber of the team. The Lions also feature 10 freshmen and four sophomores who will help the Behrend squad improve ff-sg , ■ champs, Frostburg One of the keys this season has been the performances of the team’s freshmen. The top finishers in the touma for Behrend were freshmen Brad Ruffo, Reuben Smith and Craig Davis, who finished fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively. Volleyball’s Bemls sets new records The women’s volleyball team, led by senior Danielle Bemis, finished the season with 17-17 record and was upset in the first round of the AMCC tournament. The Lady Lions finished the regular season with a .500 overall record and were 8-4 in the AMCC, good for a second place finish. In the AMCC tournament, though, they were defeated by lower seed Penn State Altoona, 3-1. Highlights of the season included several records being broken by Bemis. The senior out side hitter set records for career kills (1,125) and digs (1,666). Bemis was also named to her second consecu tive all-conference first team. Sophomores Trisha Adams and Amanda Evans were named to the second team. Junior Ashley Ordy was named an Honorable Mention player. Freshman Rae Ann Sherred was named the AMCC Newcomer of the Year. Hull finished in fifth Behrend’s other scores were freshman Josh Loaney with an 82, junior Anthony Pagliari with an 83 and sophomore Kevin Thieman with 85. For their efforts, Hull and Loaney also made the AMCC all-conference team.
