It only loss came to Invitational host, Wheaton. There they competed against 17 teams, half of which were either D-I or D-11. Despite this stiff competition the Lions still per formed well. The men's team placed sixth with 42 points Junior Isiah Meek placed first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.31 against tough competition. Junior Donnie Hackworth placed third in pole vault clearing 14'6" breaking his old record of 14'5.25". Junior Steve Feder and senior Chad Lindell took sixth and seventh place, respectively, in pole vault. Feder cleared 13'0" and Lindell cleared 12'6". The javelin record, one of the oldest in the books, was broken by freshman Dan Mitchell. He threw for 183'6.5" and took fourth place. Freshman Jordan Gray placed third in the long jump with a distance of 21'8.5". In distance running, junior Tim Schultheis got sixth in 10,000 m with a time of 34:53.00. Junior Dan Alvis ran 10:37.47 in the 3000 m steeple chase, earning him seventh. Freshman Brad Ruffo got eighth in the 5000 m with a time of 16:16.54. Junior Mike Barlett got seventh place in the 800 m running a time of 2:01.55. a 1 3- 1 1 final score The day before, the Lady Lions played games against Macalester and Carthage, winning both of them. In its first game against Carthage, the Behrend squad routed its opponent by an 11-3 score. The standout for Behrend was freshman Cara Ludwig. Ludwig scored seven goals, setting the all-time mark for goals in a game. Over the course of the weekend, Ludwig had 16 goals, eight steals and five assists. Ludwig also has 58 goals on the season, just short of the single season record. In their opening game, the Lady Lions faced The Behrend Beacon The women's team placed 13 out of 18 despite only having 10 athletes present. In distance, junior Jess Sarver ran the 1500 m with a time of 4:52.26 earning her third. Junior Jess Knapp and fresman Leslie Gentile both placed in the 5000 m. Knapp ran for 18:21.6 placing third, while Gentile ran in 18:57.0 securing fifth place. In triple jump sophomore Staci Banaszek came in seventh with a distance of 34'7". The women placed in both relays despite the short age of athletes. In the 4x400 sophomore Nicole Mineweaser, junior Claire Manelik, Sarver and jun ior Marlena McNutt ran for 4:21.02 giving them sev enth place. The 4xloo team, consisting of Mineweaser, Manelik, Banaszek and McNutt, placed eighth with a time of 53:48. Seven people qualified for Eastern Collegiate Ath letic Conference (ECAC) Championships held in Springfield, Mass. On the women's team Sarver, Knapp and Gentile qualified. The men's team had Meek, Hackworth. Gray and Mitchell qualified. Head coach Dave Cooper felt the team did welloverall against the tough competition. "Many who didn't place for us improved their performances and placed among the top tier finish ers in their events." Cooper said. "The teams are progressing nicely. Injuries are becoming a problem. But we look for continued im provement at Mount Union. It should be a large meet with more D-111 competition." Macalester, winning by an 8-6 final score. Leading the way was senior Sarah McGarvey with four goals. Ludwig added two goals while sopho more Samantha Cibula and freshman Alexis Puhala each had one goal a piece. With their performance this weekend, the Lady Lions now have a 4-18 overall record. While their record is less than stellar, the team's performance this past weekend showed that they are making great strides and improving. The team has only five games left in its season and faced Gannon on Thursday.
