Pat Carver MTHBD, 04 Student groups upping voter numbers College Republicans spread name throughout campus by Sheri Rose contributing writer Election time has started and already we have been bombarded with campaign ads for Sen. John Kerry and President George W. Bush. But that's not all; soon you'll be seeing a lot of local cam paigning for the Republican Party. On campus, the College Republican group has been planning events for upcoming elections. The College Republicans are a Behrend orga nization that is recognized at a state and national level, and they have just gotten started for the up coming election. This group has been a part of the Behrend campus for four years now, since the Bush/Gore election of 2000. A lot of the club's time is spent working on grass-roots connections, as well as manning vot ing polls on election days. The Behrend organi zation has worked with U.S. Rep. Phil English, and on April 24 all the College Republican mem bers in English's voting district have been invited to his house for dinner. A major issue the College Republicans will be pushing this semester is registering to vote. This week the club set up a table outside of Bruno's for this purpose. Students were able to register to vote or obtain an absentee ballot form. "The forms only take two minutes to fill out." Piera said. "Bringing this to campus is very conve nient for students. Most college students don't know where they would go to obtain these forms." Other events that the College Republicans will be putting on around campus will be a "party for the President." This is to gather supporters for Bush to socialize and get to know one another. In the past, the club has had political speakers come to Behrend, but none are scheduled for the spring due to lack of interest from the students on campus. "In the past, speaker attendance hasn't been very successful," Piera said. T The College Republicans welcome all to join in their activities, and you don't have to commit a lot of your time to become a member. Their meetings are every Thursday at 12:20 p.m. You can contact Piera at lspll3@psu.edu. Also NEWS Friday, April 9, 2004 Public relations class to host voting drive in Bruno's by Kristen Schumm contributing writer With Presidential elections just around the corner in November, some students have come upon the realization that it's time to get involved. That's why a class group project in COMMU3OS has turned into a much larger feat. "Get out the vote" is a public relations campaign put together by six communication students who want to make it easy for students to register to vote this year. Voting registration forms will be available for students to fill out in Bruno's on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Those who register to vote will have a chance to win a variety of prizes, donated by local businesses such as A Total Tan and Panera Bread. There will also be a DJ in Bruno's for entertainment while the registration is going on. The students from the class will be there to answer any questions one might have about voting and filling out a reg- Little Shop of Horrors, Continued "From the very beginning I was impressed with how talented the leads were," said Dr. John Champagne, professor of English, who played the part of Orin, a chauvinistic dentist. "We felt that it was an issue that needed to be addressed. Decisions are being made for us and at this point in our lives, we need to start making decisions for ourselves," Graves said. The group realizes that college students are stereotyped as being apathetic towards voting. "By getting more students to vote," Graves said, "I hope that college students will be per ceived as more independent." After talking to students at Behrend about why they don't vote, the group found out that some feel that registering to vote might be com plicated, and it's hard to keep up with the poli tics during their hectic day-to-day ventures. When asked if registering to vote is easy, Graves responded, "If students can apply to college, then they can fill out a registration form." Christine Mangone, director and lecturer in Theatre.
