Aaron Wood POLSC, 02 Smith Chapel Ministry feeds the hungry soul by Angela Szesciorka news editor The Smith Chapel hosted Soup for the Soul, the first of the series this semester on Thursday at noon in the Smith Chapel. There was no cost to attend, and a free lunch of soup, break and iced tea was provided, catered by the Housing and Food Services. The head speaker was the coordinator of the Protestant Campus Ministry, Lynn McNeil. She spoke about her personal experiences with religion in terms of geography and environment. She reflected on her friends' influence on her and what she came to realize about her life in relation to religion in her life. She ended her speech with a poem by Carl Sandburg called "Names," and asked that all present "What I like about Soup for the Soul is that it's a good opportunity for students to hear from their peers as well as their teachers and to ask questions that they are going through or may go through in their life," McNeil said. Following the speech was a reflection and discussion between the group on the geography of faith and how it has impacted spiritual growth and progression of faith. Every week the selected speaker chooses discussion questions based on the speech to discuss afterward. LEB gears up for Battle of the Bands by Ben Raymond staff writer April may seem a long way off, but between accepting applicants and booking national recording artists like The Juliana Theory, time is everything. This includes those preparing this year's Battle of the Bands. Scheduled for April 30, the Battle of the Bands competition is projected to be a huge event on the campus and lets students relax before finals week. When all of the applications are turned in, 10 will be chosen to compete for a cash prize and possibly recording time and a fall show here at Behrend. On April 30, the competition is scheduled to run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Erie Hall. There will be free food and a 50-50 raffle. Plans are in the works to have prizes given away throughout the day. Chicken soup was not the only thing being served on the ladle. Also served was vegetarian wild rice soup and fresh wheat and sourdough rolls. The Dobbins Dining Hall staff provided the event with homemade food. The soup menu changes every week, but there always will be a meat or vegetarian choice. This semester, the series will last for six weeks during the Lenten season and will focus on the personal stories of Christ in our daily lives. The theme of last semester, a four week session, reflected on "Inspirations: Stories of the People, Events and Things that inspire us." The series takes place in the living room of the Smith Chapel every Thursday excluding March 11, when school is out for spring break. The lecture series will end April 8. Those who wish to attend are asked to RSVP by contacting McNeil or Sr. Mary Drexler, minister of the Catholic Campus Ministry, because seating is limited. The Protestant and Catholic Campus Ministry leaders McNeil and Drexler founded the series in February 2002. Their mission is to give people an opportunity to reflect on their spiritual lives and enabling campus Christians to contact and get to know each other. With all of this going on, things should only get better. At 7:30 p.m. after all the contestants have had their shot, those in attendance will be treated to a performance by The Juliana Theory. Early in the year, students participated in a survey to see where the majority of interest in music was. It was not a vote for the bands that were listed on the survey. That was only to get an idea for the different styles of music that students were interested in. The Juliana Theory was booked at the right time and for the right price and decided to bring some friends along. They are bringing several bands with them to help out and N, . Their guests include the bands Numberonefan, Berlin and Bayside. Student interest in the event seems very positive and serves as a good indication for this year's battle of the bands.
