With three games remaining before the confer ence tournament, the Lions have all but locked up the regular season title Runners prepare for outdoor season at Fredonia by Kevin Fiorenzo On Friday, the men's and women's indoor track and field teams continued their successful season with strong showings by both squads at the Fredonia Invitational The men's team was the overall winners for the day with 68 points. The women's team finished in second place behind Fredonia. Overall, the men's team accumulated eight first place finishes and seven second places. The women's team had six firsts and six second places. Head coach Dave Cooper said, "Since this was our only 'scored' meet of the season, we instructed the athletes to go after points and places and not worry about times and distances." In the men's 800 m, junior Mike Barlett finished in first with a time of 2:01.60. He was followed closely in second and third by juniors Floyd Mattie and Clayton Kirschner. Behrend also had the top two finishers in the 55m hurdles as junior Isaiah Meek and senior Dave Masilunas finished with times of 8.04 and 8.16, respectively. Behrend was also the victor in both relay events, the 4x400m and 4xBoom. Freshman Jon McKinney also had a strong outing as he won the long jump (6.33 m) and high jump (1.67 m). He also finished in second in the triple jump, behind sophomore teammate Shane Rock. The men's team's final victory came in the pole vault, where junior Donnie Hackworth came out on top with a distance of 4.26 m. On the women's side, junior Claire Manelick won the 800 m run with a time of 2:30.70. She was followed in second place by senior teammate Jessica Sarver with a time of 2:31.10. Sarver also performed well in the 15(X)m run, finishing in first at 5:05.05. Senior Jessica Knapp emerged as the victor in the 3000 m run with a time of 10:51.24. The women's team also won the 4xBoom relay at 10:24.31. Sophomore Staci Banaszek excelled in the jumping events, winning two events and finishing in second in another. She won the high jump and triple jump with distances of 1.56 m and 10.75 m. Her distance in the high jump was a Behrend record. She finished in second in the long jump with a distance of 16.9 m, also a Behrend record and qualified for ECACs. Coach Cooper was impressed with all the performances this weekend, especially with the struggles that the weather causes. " The recent slight warm up has helped clear the areas where we train, but snow, ice, cold and wind have been a constant," said Cooper. "Some of the times and performances they have had are remarkable when you consider the adversity." With the strong performances this past weekend, the team can now look ahead optimistically toward the rest of the indoor season and soon, outdoor events. "We continue to work with the goal of continued improvement through the indoor season and right into the outdoor competitions," said Cooper. The teams will have three weeks between meets and then return at the Mount Union Invitational on Feb. 28. Cooper said, "Not having a meet this weekend or next weekend will give us an opportunity to get a couple full weeks of training in so I believe it will help us in most events." sports editor
